About Bergen Maritime Museum

On your tour you will see many different types of objects such as ship models, paintings, figureheads, but also smaller items that tell the story of seafarers. With the app, you will hear stories that you would otherwise have overlooked.
The Bergen Maritime Museum was established in 1921 by Bergen Rederiforening and Bergen Skipperforening. Their collections formed the core of the museum’s objects. Today’s magnificent building was designed by architech Per Grieg and was completed in 1962. Today, the Bergen Maritime Museum is a branch within Museum Vest, which also presents the history of fishing, the coastal region and war.
Bergen Maritime Museum documents and researches the maritime history of Bergen. We collect items and photographs which tells this story. The museum publishes a maritime history yearbook and has a specialized library with a reading room. Maritime archaeological research is an important part of the museum's activities. Our archaeologists investigate coastal and fjord areas from Sunnhordland to Sunnmøre. The Bergen Maritime Museum also actively disseminates maritime history on the seven seas through exhibitions, educational programs for schools and kindergartens, family events, lectures, and social media. Therefore, it is quite possible that you may encounter a kindergarten or a school class during your visit to the exhibitions.
