About NSRI SafeTrx

Official app of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) - The NSRI SafeTrx App allows you to register your vessel and plan your journey on your Smartphone.

Registering vessel and journey information couldn’t be any easier. Follow an easy to understand registration process to register your contact and vessel details within the application. Choose from the menu options to plan and file your trip (Sail Plan mode) or just activate the tracking function of the app (Track only mode).

To file a Sail Plan, choose your vessel, add the ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), enter the number of persons on board and the activity type. Using the built-in maps, select a starting point, an optional waypoint and the end destination. Once this is completed simply press the ‘set sail’ button when you are ready to start your journey.

Pressing ‘set sail’ will register the journey details with the NSRI computer server and will activate position reporting in the App. At regular intervals the App will send a position report to the server and your emergency contacts will be automatically alerted 30 minutes after the journey exceeds the ETA. At any stage during the journey you can end your trip, revise the ETA, number of people on board or the destination.

Use the NSRI SafeTrx app to:

- Improve maritime trip planning with your own personalised checklist to be included as part of your Sail Plan.
- Activate an emergency call while your trip is in progress. (iPhone only)
- Quickly start your trip using the ‘Track only’ mode to begin tracking at a touch of a button.
- Store up to 20 trips in your Mobile Logbook and replay trips within the app in video playback mode.
- View your journey history and manage your vessels, emergency contacts and other important information through the NSRI SafeTrx boater site - https://safetrx.nsri.org.za

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

*Please note - The information and functions provided in the App are provided on the understanding that users exercise their own skill and care with respect to use of the App. Safety at sea is a serious consideration. In emergency circumstances, you should not rely solely on the information and functions provided in this application, but seek information and assistance from as many sources as possible. The App may provide you with information and assistance relevant to your current location, as determined by your Device. However the mobile devices and the telecommunications systems that support mobile devices are inherently unreliable and there is a risk that there will be no connectivity between your Device and global positioning systems from time to time. We cannot guarantee uninterrupted connectivity between your Device and global positioning systems. You assume all such risk when using the App. The App is intended to be used as a supplementary tracking aid and should not be used as your only vessel communication or safety device.

This update includes changes to the Track Only mode tracking option. When setting up a Track Only trip, you now have the option of specifying whether or not you are on a vessel or craft. You also have the ability to choose from a list of activities in this mode.

This update checks for the Location Services permission ‘Precise:on’ and prompts you to change this setting if it is set to ‘off’. This permission is required in order to record a Sail Plan or Track Only trip.
2019.3.0
Feb 7, 2020
This update includes the addition of an ‘Alert & Track’ feature. On the initiation of an Emergency or Assistance call, the app will now transmit a location update to the SafeTrx server every 5 minutes instead of a single position in the following scenarios:

- If you don’t have an active trip and an Emergency or Assistance call is activated.
- Emergency or Assistance call activations for Track Only trips set to 10 minute and 30 minute recording intervals.

Where an Emergency or Assistance call is activated in Sail Plan mode or Track Only '5 minute' or 'Continuous’ modes, the app will continue reporting regular position updates to the SafeTrx server.

Please note:
-This new function is not a replacement of the tracking functions ‘Sail Plan’ and ‘Track Only.’ It provides minimal information.
-You cannot share your trip with ‘Emergency contacts’ or friends if you do not use one of the two tracking functions.
2019.2.0
Nov 12, 2019
This update includes the addition of an ‘Alert & Track’ feature to address potential issues with GPS ‘time to first fix’ and the possibility of a drifting casualty. •If you don’t have an active trip and an Emergency call is activated.
•Emergency call activations for Track Only trips set to 10 minute and 30 minute recording intervals.

The ‘Alert & Track’ mode can be cancelled at any time by sliding the ’Slide to Cancel Alert’ button across the screen.
Where an Emergency call is activated in Sail Plan mode or Track Only '5 minute' or 'Continuous’ modes, the app will continue reporting regular position updates to the SafeTrx server.

2019.1.0
Apr 10, 2019
This new version contains an exciting new feature that allows emergency contacts ashore to track a number of people participating in the one session.

On the ‘Track Only’ mode screen, you can now generate a once-off ‘Private Group Code’ and share it with others in your group. Any group member using the code in their ‘Track Only’ trip allows the trip to be shared on a webpage and displays the tracks of other individuals participating in the group.

PLEASE NOTE:
This release also includes the removal of the ‘long press distress’ feature. A long press action on the screen will no longer activate the Emergency call screen. The Emergency call screen can still be accessed as follows:
•The ‘Call for Help’ button on the Sail Plan and Track Only mode screens
•The ‘Call for Help’ button on the home screen
•The ‘Emergency Call’ button on the side bar menu
2018.2.0

For the What's New section:
• A new 5 minute tracking interval option has been added to Track Only mode. You can now choose from 30 minute, 10 minute, 5 minute and Continuous tracking intervals to record your trip.
• When a Sail Plan is adjusted in any way, the app will give the end user the option to send a SMS to the emergency contact(s) with the updated Sail Plan details.
• To help end users avoid errors in password entry, we have included an icon on the 'Password' field that allows the end user to see what they are typing in.
• Included the ability for the end user to rate the app through in-app review stars.
• Included links to the national beacon register in the vessel registration form.
• Addressed issue with Flag Alpha when a location isn’t available.

Tap the 'Divers Down' button on the 'Trip in Progress' screen when divers have entered the water and the 'Divers Up' button when they are safely back on board.
