West Nile virus (WNV) is a serious, sometimes deadly disease that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes to people, birds, horses and other animals. It is the most prevalent mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Additional mosquito-borne illnesses including Zika and dengue fever can be transmitted by new non-native species of mosquitoes which have been introduced and spread throughout San Diego County in recent years. You can help reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases in San Diego County.
“Fight the Bite!” with our Vector Control Program and report neglected swimming pools, other mosquito breeding sources and dead birds to the County for treatment or testing. Neglected pools can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes that transmit WNV, while dead birds can be tested for the virus. Vector Control will pick up viable birds for testing or contact the homeowner and treat the pool at no charge. Eliminating back yard mosquito breeding sources reduces the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Other enhancements include a new icon, interface colors and a link to our Privacy Policy.
