HockeyTracker Description
As Featured by iMore, track and analyze every aspect of your hockey!

HockeyTracker turns every Apple Watch into a sophisticated hockey tracking computer. Start HockeyTracker before a game and track your favorite performance stats, and afterwards, dive deep into your data.

HockeyTracker tracks just about any performance metric you can imagine, plus a few exclusive to HockeyTracker.

Key Features:

• Dedicated Game, Pick-up, Practice, Goalie, Dryland Training, Coach, Stick Time, Open Skate, Pond and Ref modes
• Automatic Shift Detection* (including shift length, calories burned, top speed, and heart rates from each shift)
* Recovered (fresh) Heart Rate Alert
* High Heart Rate Alert
* Live In-Game Stat Tracking
* Live In-Game summary of your last shift (duration, cals, distance, and avg speed)
• Game Scores
• Goals, Assists, and Plus-Minus Rating
• Calories Burned
• Distance Skated
• Heart Rates (including Max and Average Ice Time Heart Rates)
• Max and Average Skating Speed
• Ice time
• VO2 max**
• Heart Rate Recovery
• Maximum Capable Speed
• Hockey Fitness Level
• Skate Efficiency
* Effort Level
* Heart Rate Zone Analysis
• Longest, shortest and average shift times
• Historical graphs of all your metrics over time to see whether you're improving
• Shift Timer: set your desired shift time and get a haptic ping to tell you to get to the bench!
• Share your stats via text, email, Twitter, Facebook, Slack!
• Freshness Meter Complication so you know how prepared you are for your next session
• The notes section lets you keep track of how you played or describe goals, hits and penalties etc.
• Custom heart rate filtering algorithm that will filter out falsely high heart rate values.

HockeyTracker lets you record a full workout, from start to finish, without a phone.

*HockeyTracker uses a proprietary shift tracking algorithm that is able to detect whether a place is on the ice or on the bench.

**Note that in order to calculate VO2Max, HockeyTracker uses your resting heart rate (as is set by Apple during period of inactivity). Series 0 Apple Watches are not capable of resting heart rates therefore VO2Max cannot be calculated at this time on Series 0 Watches.

Notes:
• HockeyTracker requires an Apple Watch to collect the data it displays
• HockeyTrack integrates with the Health App on your iPhone to retrieve the data it displays. It will request permission to access the relevant data types associated with a workout.

Quick Update: Instagram (Facebook) started requiring an App ID to be able to share your HockeyTracker stories to Instagram, so the they should be working again.

See you on the ice!
Gary
3.4.0 2023-01-10
This update features an all new in game experience on the watch app including a redesigned heart rate chart with your heart rate zones color coded.

Note also in the last update, Apple Watch Ultra users can configure their watches in settings to start a HT workout from the Ultra's Action Button!

See you on the ice!

3.3.8 2022-09-13
Quick update to fix distance skated which was broken somehow in the new iOS 16.

3.3.7 2022-04-21
Fixed an issue with both widgets. Also renamed the large widget to "30 Day Trends" which it always was (comparing your skates in the most recent 30 days to the previous 30 days) so calling it Monthly trends made it sound like it was comparing skates in this month to last month - which isn't what we want because then every month your stats would reset to 0.

3.3.6 2022-03-26
Quick update just to address a few minor bugs where you might see zero's for certain metrics. If you were missing information from a previous workout for some reason if you go back now it should calculate.

3.3.5 2022-02-18
Cleaned up a few UI issues where the share cards might be squished on smaller iPhones.

Also fixed an issue where a score of 0 may not show up on the home screen.

Also fixed a UI issue where an arrow was showing under the scales in the Insights tab.

A few other bug fixes and optimizations.

3.3.4 2021-11-24
This update includes a redesign of the More tab which includes a new toggle to use a Custom Max Heart Rate. Up until now, HockeyTracker used your average max heart rate from your past 5 sessions to calculate Effort Level and your heart rate zones. Now, it will still use your average max as a default, however if you turn on the Use Custom Max Heart Rate switch and set a Custom Max, HockeyTracker will use this Custom Max instead.

3.3.2 2021-10-19
Based on user feedback, on the new In Game Live Screen the size of the text of heart rates (Max Last and Min) has been increased and made bold to match the other metrics and be more visible. Thanks for the feedback!

Also restored the Color coding of your last heart rate on the watch if you have Recovered alert set (green if recovered, white if above) or High HR Warning set (red if above your chosen threshold, white if below). This was temporarily disabled on the previous version but the haptic feedback would still tap you. If you haven't tried either of these features on the watch swipe right to bring up settings and scroll to the bottom and tap on Heart Rate Alerts, they both can be very useful!

Also fixed a UI bug where the arrows under the scale on the HRR, Vo2 Max, Hockey Fitness Level, and Skating Efficiency cards might have been missing if you are using a larger text size on your iPhone.

See you on the ice!

3.3.1 2021-10-16
Quick update to fix a bug that sometimes occurred after changing a session type and adding team names as well as some fine tuning to live shifts during a game.

Also from the previous update:

Big Updates for Fall Hockey Season!!

(1) All new in-game View that captures all of your metrics in 1 screen, including an in-game heart rate chart!
(2) A completely redesigned Trends tab replaces the old Insights Tab to better visualize your data over time including an expandable and tappable chart!
(3) The Shift Card now shows a bar chart of your shifts, no longer on top of the Shift Details View.
(4) Increased Haptic Feedback on Shift Timer from .Stop to .Notification. This should be much more detectable while you are playing. Note that you can additionally increase the power of haptic feedback on the watch by following these steps:

1. Open Settings
2. Swipe down or use the Digital Crown to find Sounds & Haptics
3. Swipe down again and tap Prominent under HAPTICS (make sure Haptic Alerts are toggled on)

Also some bug fixes and optimizations, live shift tracking on the watch specifically should be much more accurate.

For the rest of v3.0 updates:

HockeyTracker 3.0 is full of new features and a complete redesign of the iPhone App.

Major iPhone App New Features

(1) A new HockeyTracker lite version where users who aren’t subscribed yet can see the same stats they can on the watch (e.g. speed, max HR, calories, and distance from their skates). Advanced metrics like Effort Level, Heart Rate Recovery, VO2 Max etc. as well as charts and graphs are now unlockable with a subscription.

(2) In the Insights section you can now filter by workout type, in other words you can visualize all of your data for games, practices, pickups etc. (this was a very popular feature request I’m happy I was able to finally add)

(3) A completely new design with full support for dark mode

Major Watch App Features

(1) A new Freshness Meter complication (graphic corner) which pulls your most recent resting HR so you know how fresh you are for the next skate.

(2) Live in-game shift tracking which will tell you the length, average heart rate, average speed, and distance skated from your last shift. You'll also see your shift count in the summary screen. Both features are available if unlocked with HockeyTracker Pro.

(3) If you swipe to the left from the home screen you will now see the past 7 days workouts on the watch (at this time HealthKit is limited to being able to query only the past 7 days worth of workout data from the watch).

(4) A new Dryland Training Mode for any type of off-ice training (for ex. running, cross fit, stick handling etc.). Dryland Training mode will track your calories, distance, speed, heart rate, effort level, VO2 Max and HRR. It will also not pull into your historical data as far as max speed, distance skated, Skate Efficiency, Hockey Fitness Level etc. so as to not cloud that data.

(5) Implemented support for Watch only purchases. You can now subscribe to HockeyTracker Pro on the watch app itself.

(6) The order that session types are arranged in the main screen are now "smart", i.e. the session types you use the most will populate first.

(7) VO2 Max readings are now available on the watch (both during workout and in the summary) if unlocked in HockeyTracker Pro.

(8) An Outdoor switch is now available in settings. Set this to on if you are roller blading or doing dryland training outside etc. for better tracking with GPS. Leave it off if you are playing indoors.

Bug Fixes:

Finally fixed a bug that prevented auto water lock from locking the watch! Remember if you swipe into settings on the left on the Watch App and enable Auto Water Lock, your Watch will automatically lock every time that you start a workout. This prevents accidentally ending the workout under your glove.

When you add stats or notes to a workout, the process has been much improved and you will no longer see long load times or get duplicate workouts.

Please feel to reach out with any bugs or feedback once you’ve had a chance to try it out.

See you on the ice!

2.8.9 2020-02-19
A redesigned Apple Watch Experience! You will now swipe right to navigate to the settings screen. When starting a workout, no more clunky rolling the digital crown to select a workout...now you will just tap the appropriate skate type and the workout will start. Because it's now easier to start a workout, I removed the option to select a default skate type as it was no longer necessary.

In the Insights section when you tap on the time period (Career, Year, Month or Week) now not only will the chart data change but the personal records, where applicable, will update to the given time period as well.

Fixed a bug in end workout reminder where even if you switched it on, in settings it wasn't enabled. Should be working now!

Fixed a few bugs in the Insights section where if you tapped on the chart the dates weren't showing correctly, and certain values weren't rounding.

See you on the ice!
Gary
2.8.8 2020-02-04
A few under the hood bug fixes and improvements...

Also a further tweak to end workout reminder. Remember this can be enabled in settings on the Watch App and will remind you if it looks like you forgot to end your workout.

A few other optimizations and under the hood fixes...

2.8.3 2020-01-20
New Feature Alert! Recovered Alerts and High Heart Rate Alerts on the Watch App!

Recovered and High Heart Rate Alerts are both opt in features, which need to be enabled by going into Settings on the Watch App. Recovered Alert lets you know when your heart rate drops to a certain level, i.e. you are fresh to play. You will toggle the Recovered Alert switch on and set a Heart Rate. So for example if you set your Recovered heart rate to 100 bpm, when your heart rate drops to this heart rate you will receive a haptic tap on the wrist and the watch screen’s Last Heat Rate will turn green to let you know you are recovered and ready to play again.

High Heart Rate Alert works the same way and lets you know when your heart rate rises above a certain level. You will turn on the High HR Warning switch and set a Heart Rate. So for example, if you set your High Heart Rate Alert value to 185 bpm, when your heart rate rises above this level you will receive a haptic tap on the wrist and the watch screen’s Last Heart Rate will turn red.

Further tweaks End Workout Reminder, it should be working better now.

A few other under the hood tweaks...

Gary
2.8.2 2020-01-14
Quick update to set the live in game stats to Enabled by default. This was supposed to be the case but it wasn't unless you first navigated to settings on the watch, now it is on by default.

See you on the ice!
Gary
2.8.1 2020-01-10
Quick update to fix an issue where PR badges were showing to new users.

Also from 2.8:

This update introduces live in-game stat tracking! Scroll all the way to the right on the watch app and you can enter goals, assists, and plus minus (for goalie mode: goals against, shots faced, and saves) live during the game. If you don't want to see the live stats screen during your workout you can turn it off by going into settings and switching off Enable In-Game Stats Enabled.

Ice time during ref mode will now default to total workout time (the previous calculation using an algorithm similar to automatic shift tracking proved too inaccurate as reported by users).

A few other under the hood optimizations...

2.6.6 2019-09-27
New feature Alert! Automatic workout ended detection is now an (opt in) option in settings on the watch. If you turn on End Workout Reminder in settings on the watch, HockeyTracker will remind you to end your workout if it looks like it ended.

This is a feature that many users requested, to avoid jumping in the car after a game and forgetting to end the workout (no more 80MPH speed readings!).

Also a few other bug fixes and clean up items for Watch OS6 and iOS 13 in this version.

2.6.5 2019-09-21
Just in time for fall hockey season!

Full support for iPhone 11, Series 5 Watch, iOS 13 and WatchOS 6!

The Insights section has been redesigned with a cleaner look. Goalies now have a section in the Insights section where they can track their shots against, goals allowed, and saves over time. In the settings section you can hide goalie stats, or if you're a goalie you can hide skater and shift stats.

2.6.4 2019-07-23
Added share and Instagram share buttons to the last skate screen. Now you can easily share your last skate stats with your teammates and friends!

Added custom coach labels inside Last Skate's HockeyFitnessLevel and Skate Efficiency that will now compare how your last skate ranks up against your previous average HFL and SE.

Added a section inside settings where you can link to manage your subscriptions.

2.6.3 2019-06-22
Major update to the way score and stats are entered on the iPhone! The score and stat screen has been revamped and given it's own dedicated full page (swipe to the farthest right screen when looking at a past workout from the list of workouts). Tap the edit button to add scores and stats plus the new additions of (1) team names (2) league and (3) rink.

Also the scales and ratings for Skating Efficiency were tweaked a bit rather than the highest achievable skating efficiency rating being 4.0, it is now 2.0 which is much more realistic.

Also added coaching descriptions on the share screen, so now your Effort Levels, Hockey Fitness Levels, and Skating Efficiency ratings will be labeled "above average" or "Beast Mode" etc.

2.6.2 2019-04-25
New Feature Alert! Auto Water Lock! By going into settings on the Watch App, you can now enable Auto Water Lock so that every time you start a workout, your watch automatically water locks itself to prevent accidentally ending a workout. (This feature is off by default, so needs to be turned on in settings to enable).

Also Shift Timer is now disabled when you are in a session type that doesn't involve shifts, i.e. practice, stick time, goalie, ref, coach or open skate.

2.6.1 2019-03-29
Quick big fix update to address an issue where the score and stats screen was getting squished.

2.6:
MAJOR UPDATE ALERT!
This update adds a new Last Workout Screen as the featured screen of HockeyTracker. Now after a workout you'll be immediately taken to the stats from that workout. From this Last Workout Screen you can tap on each metric to take a deep dive into each individual metric which now feature more graphs and scales to give more context to what your data means (many more updates are on the way here so stay tuned!).

Speed Tweaks: I started out with an average speed metric that tracked the average speed that you skate during your entire session. The problem is that when we play hockey, we’re sometimes standing around, barely moving, or moving very slowly (during stoppages penalty kills etc.). Because of this inherent intermittent nature of movement during hockey, average speed as a metric isn’t very interesting given that the slowest movements makes the overall average skew low. To address this, I’ve come up with an Average Burst metric which attempts to isolate only those samples where you were actually skating and full-speed or close to it, and average those. I think that you will find that Average Burst is a much more meaningful metric especially as a comparison in between skates.

A few more under the hood tweaks, see you on the ice!

2.5.3 2019-01-18
This update includes a new detailed heart rate zone analysis to show exactly how much time you spent in each customized heart rate zone during your workout. Effort Level is derived from these heart rate zones.

See you on the ice!
2.5.2 2019-01-12
This update adds a button to directly share to Instagram Stories! Just tap the Instagram icon on the top right!

Also, Effort Level is now viewable in the Insights section so that you can see your Effort Levels over time! (note that you will only see Effort Levels from sessions that were logged with version 2.5 and later).

This update includes the following updates from version 2.5:

Introducing Effort Level!!! While Hockey Tracker’s existing custom metrics Skating Efficiency and Hockey Fitness Ratio measure how fit a player is, Effort Level now measures how much effort the player put forth during the game, or in other words how hard they worked.
Effort Level is based on how much time you spend in 5 heart rate zones. The cumulative time in each zone is multiplied by a co-efficient, each progressively weighted higher. So if you have a really intense game where your heart rate is often in your highest zone, the time in that highest zone will be weighted higher and correspondingly, your Effort Level will be higher.

These zones are customized to you based on your past 5 workouts (the average of the 5 max heart rates from each workout). In this way, Effort Level is customized to each player so that even an older player can compare effort with a younger player.

I’ve also made a lot of bug fixes, under the hood optimizations, and tweaks.

*Calorie Counting
HockeyTracker uses a custom calorie counter that is programmed to be hockey-specific. To further enhance the accuracy of your calorie count, HT now leverages the new Effort Level metric as an additional factor in your calorie count.

*Skating Efficiency
Skating Efficiency is a custom metric that is based on your skating speed and corresponding heart rate. Previously, Skating Efficiency was calculated using your max speed and max heart rate from the entire workout. In this update I’ve reworked the SE algorithm so that (1) not just your single max speed value, but the top 10% of your max speed values will be used (so that an anomalous value will be smoothed) and (2) it now interpolates heart rate values at the times of those speed values instead of just using the workout’s max heart rate. Also just a single Skating Efficiency metric is used now (rather than average and max as before). I think you will find this metric much more meaningful now!

*Maximum Capable Speed
MCS has also been further tweaked: (1) MCS is now based on your average max heart rate of the past few games (rather than the highest HR achievable on the Watch, 210. This should provide for a more realistic value. (2) Previously MCS was calculated based on your overall max speed and max heart rate from your workout, now HT will read your max speed and use the Heart Rate sample from the exact moment you achieved that speed.

*Hockey Fitness Ratio
Similar to Skating Efficiency and Maximum Capable speed, Hockey Fitness Ratio is now calculated using your interpolated max heart rate at the exact instant of your max speed from the workout. Again, this should make for a much for meaningful metric. (Note that in a subsequent update Hockey Fitness Ratio will be renamed Hockey Fitness Level, similar to its related metric Effort Level, and also to sound a little less like a calculus exam.

*Changed the Insights section to show your stats from the past 365 days (as opposed to the calendar year).

HUGE 2.1 Update!

Feature Add: New Apple Watch Complication! Now you can quickly launch into HockeyTracker from your Watch Face!

Feature Add: Added dedicated Coach, Stick Time, Pond, and Open Skate modes!

Feature Add: added location tracking so you will now know where a given workout took place. After installing this update, just open your iPhone and grant permission for location tracking while using the app. Now every time you start a new workout on your watch, it will save the location and display it along with your stats on the iPhone. NOTE: the location is editable (just like score and stats are) just tap on the label to edit it. YES, this means you can go back and add locations to all of your previous workouts, as well as lets you customize whether you played at a certain rink etc.

Updated Calorie Count: Based on user feedback, I've dialed in calorie counting In this update. I did this by leveraging the shift tracking algorithm and calculating calories burned based on ice time and user weight. It’s imperative for the most accurate calorie counts that you consistently enter your weight into the Health app as HockeyTracker pulls your bodyMass from there. Given this calculation happens on the iPhone you will notice that the calorie count during your workout may be slightly different than the count that gets saved with the workout. This is because the calculation that is used after the workout is saved is more thorough (and accurate) than the calculation that is done in real-time.

Also added a Frequently Asked Question section in settings.

Bug Fixes: Fixed an issue where some text wasn't displaying properly on iPhone SE models. Fixed an issue where some users had trouble navigating back to Settings from the Shift Timer tutorial.

Other stuff: added app version number at bottom of Settings on iPhone

2.0.2 2018-07-19
Some tweaks to the graphs in the historical section:

(1) Added a grid for better reference
(2) The "Month" tab will now include skates within the last 30 days rather than just the current calendar month (same for weeks, they're now past 7 days)
(3) Added Max Heart Rate to graphs
(4) Added Average Ice Time Heart Rate to graphs (note this is Average Ice Time HR, i.e. this only averages your heart rates while you are on the ice...heart rates on the bench are not counted)
(5) Renamed Historical tab to Insights, because, well, it sounds way cooler...

Misc. under the hood bug fixes and improvements
2.0 2018-07-07
HockeyTracker 1.0 launched in January of 2018 as a proof of concept. I wanted focus first on building out the basic essentials of an app that could track every metric a hockey player would want.

Version 2.0 now adds a UI refresh and ability to track players' metrics over time.

Everything included in 2.0:

*Historical Section (see your stats and metrics graphs based on the week, month, or year). Drag your finger on the graph to see the data point.
*Fresh design and user interface (inside a workout, swipe left or right to navigate between your metric categories)
*You will now see your shift times graphed above the list of shifts
*Updated Watch UI with icons for metrics
*Dedicated Goalie Mode including the ability to add shots on goal and saves
*Dedicated Ref Mode
*Under the hood bug fixes and enhancements

I would especially like to thank Jenny Ward for her design work and bringing a fresh look to HockeyTracker.

I'd love to hear your feedback! Tweet @ me at @hockeyTracker_ or email me at gary@myndarc.com
