观世音信仰很早就流行于西域，而且历久不衰。本品主要宣说观世音菩萨的普门示现。长行叙述无尽意菩萨和佛的两番问答。初次问答观世音菩萨得名因缘。二次问答观世音菩萨为众生说法的方便。末段特别赞叹观世音菩萨的弘大誓愿与神奇力量，并劝众生忆念归敬观世音。颂文之后，以持地菩萨称赞闻持本品功德作结。
