About Chocorua Map

The Chocorua Map app is a mobile guide to trails and points of interest (POIs) in and around Chocorua Lake, especially the area preserved, directly or indirectly, by the Chocorua Lake Conservancy (CLC). If you allow the app to use your location (e.g., GPS), you can find and track your position on the map. Tapping on a trail not only reveals the trail's name and length but also the distance of the point tapped from the beginning and end of the trail so you can answer that age-old question "how much farther...?". Measure distances and compass bearings by tapping and dragging on the map. Publicly accessible lands of different types are shown with transparent color overlay. The background map was rendered from LiDAR topography and has a resolution of 1 meter.

The app's built-in POIs describe sites of historical interest, unique landscape features and how they developed, and features of geological and ecological significance. The user may enter their own POIs and attach photos to them; all user-entered information remains private to user's device. The user can share their POIs with other people or apps via the standard iOS Sharing Panel. The app is completely self-contained: No internet connection is necessary. Furthermore, user data is NEVER uploaded automatically to the Internet and can never be by the app programmer, CLC, or any other third party.

This app is for educational purposes only and should not be used as a sole source of navigation. The CLC and the author are not responsible for the accuracy of any of the information presented by this app.

v. 2.0.0 14 February 2021

• The user can, optionally, install a color base map of the area by clicking the Install Color Base Map button on the Info View and following the instructions

• Files that the user creates are now accessible directly from On My iPhone>Chocorua Map folder in the Files app. If you change the names or the file structure, however, you may cause the app to crash or not recognize the information in the file

• New, nicer quality buttons on the Map View toolbar

• Graphics refinements in the Map View map.
1.9.3

v. 1.9.3 -- 27 August 2020 (the "I wish I had these features at the beginning of the summer" version!)

• Construct custom hikes by tapping trails on the screen so now you can, say, display as a single hike going up the Piper Trail and come down the Liberty, Hammond, and Weetamoo Trails back to the Piper Trail. Use the measure tool on the map screen to access this feature. Tap the beginning of the hike, then tap sequentially at the intersection of each trail that you want to follow where it intersects with the previous trail. Tap the measure tool again after the last point to finish custom trail entry. Your custom route will appear in yellow on the screen and when you tap on it, a message box will appear, just like a regular trail, showing you how far you are from each end as well as how long the hike is, overall. You can tap the button for more details and, from the details screen, you can tap the profile button to see a profile of your custom hike. A custom hike remains active until you delete it or until you replace it with a different one.

• New email button on the user POI screen allows you to send an email to whomever you want of the POI location AND photo (if any), with complete location info, including elevation (you can, of course, also use the sharing button on that screen but sending an email that way only allows you to send text or a photo but not both in a singe email; don't ask why...). This is a good way to report trail damage (assuming you have the email of the person responsible for that trail!).

• Getting the location of a tapped point is somewhat different in this version: When you tap the measure button, you now get a message box asking what you want to do. Tap "Location" and then tap and drag your finger on the screen to set the point for which you want the location. When you lift your finger, a message box appears showing your location with a button that allows you to display the sharing panel if you want to send the location to someone.

• A couple of new points of interest (e.g., Middle Sister fire station ground house foundation).

• And, of course, some bug fixes...

v. 1.8.6 -- 7 July 2020

• Bug fixes and minor cosmetic changes.
1.8.5

v. 1.8.5 -- 2 July, 2020

Internal changes to improve operations in low memory conditions. This also speeds up start up.

Under the hood changes. A few typos fixed; more undoubtedly remain!
1.7.0

v. 1.7.0 19 February 2020

• The app now has an on-board, offline digital elevation model built in so you can get elevations for any point on the map. The built-in elevation database is the same as that used by the U.S. Geological Survey to construct their topographic quadrangle maps and has a 10 meter (33 ft) resolution (so it is actually less detailed than the shaded relief/contour base map that the app displays). But, if you need more accuracy...

• You can download the complete LiDAR digital elevation model that has a 1 meter resolution. Place the three files for that DEM into the Chocorua Map app documents folder and the app will automatically find and use the higher resolution topography. Instruction for how to do this are in the newly revised user manual.

• Trail profiles: From the trails details screen, tap the "Profile" button in the upper left to see a topographic profile constructed along the selected trail. Rotate your device sideways (i.e., landscape mode) so that you can see a larger version of the profile.

• By tapping and dragging along the profile, you can measure slope distance, elevation change, average slope angle and percent grade. Bonus points to the person how can find the steepest half mile trail segment on Chocorua! If you see a point on the profile and would like to see where it is on the map, a button will allow you to do that. You can change the vertical exaggeration of the profile.

• Distance measurements in the map view now show the elevation (while tapping the first point) and average slope angle (while dragging the second point).

• Miscellaneous bug fixes.
1.5.0
Jan 20, 2020
v. 1.5 -- 20 January 2020 (Happy New Year!)

• Base map now extends all the north to the trailhead of the Champney Falls trail on the Kancamagus Highway. Trails now include the Champney Falls, White Ledge, Middle Sister, Carter Ledge Trails, and the complete Bolles Trail in addition to all of those on the south side of the mountain.

• Trail descriptions from the CLC and the author. These are editable and you can save your own descriptions in addition to or in place of the existing descriptions. You can revert to the defaults at any time.

• You can now customize the color used to plot each trail in case you find the green hard to see or if you want to distinguish one trail in particular.

• A new bedrock geology layer can be toggled on in the Info screen. It is turned off by default. The age and a brief description is provided for each bedrock unit. There will eventually be photos for each rock type but that will have to wait until summer of 2020 (along with more more POIs)!

• Dark Mode is now available (on iOS 13) whenever you place your device into Dark Mode.

• 1000 ft index contours on LiDAR base map are now heavier than the others. 20 ft contours are lighter and less visible a low zoom levels. Holes in the LiDAR base map have been eliminated.

• Trail list and POI list (accessible from the Info screen) are now alphabetized for easier use.

• Numerous minor tweaks and a few bug fixes.
1.0.7

V. 1.0.7 Nov. 7, 2019

• Fix for balky pinch to zoom, especially at maximum zoom levels (this alone makes it worth downloading this new version!)
• Map is now centered when app first opens
• Target icon now shows the exact tap point when selecting trails
• You can now tap on the State Forest Wellman plot
• Minor rewording of some message box messages
