About FaultKin Mobile

FaultKin Mobile is designed to help you collect, visualize, and analyze fault slip data on the go. It is a companion to my FaultKin program for desktop computers, but it can also be used to measure faults on the outcrop. The app has the following features:

- Provide automatic data entry as a geologist's compass by reading the iOS device orientation and converting it to strike and dip of planes and/or trend and plunge of lines.

- Provide manual data entry via either tapping and dragging on the stereonet or by typing values into text fields.

- Groups of faults can be assigned different tags. You will probably want to do this based on location or other criteria. For example, you may want to have a tag labeled "Corral Quemado-Older" and anther "Corral Quemado-Younger".

- Carry out basic calculations such as: rotations about any axis, unfolding faults around local bedding, or measure angles between lines and between planes.

- Plot P and T axes, (unweighted) moment tensor axes, P-T dihedra, fault plane solutions, and contour P and T axes.

- View the plots from any orientation, not just looking straight down into the lower hemisphere

- Stamp each entry with time date and, if enabled by the user, location. See the location of a datum in the iOS Maps program

- Provide basic input and output of data using standard iOS conventions

- Work on both iPhones or iPads, both in portrait mode only.

The desktop version of FaultKin will soon be updated so that it can read and write FaultKin Mobile files, which are simple tab separated text files.

Use it at your own risk. In particular, recall that your iOS device is very sensitive to magnetic fields and the compass bearings can easily be off by 10-20°! This program should not be used as a sole source of navigation data. The author assumes no responsibility for incorrect results, unanticipated behaviors, loss resulting from results provided by the program, or any other anticipated or unanticipated event related to the program.

v. 2.0.6 -- fixes a non-critical bug with point symbols that was inadvertently introduced in the last version.

v. 2.0.5 -- fixes a crashing bug that was introduced in v. 2.0

Please feel free to submit bug reports via my web page if you experience problems with any of my programs

v. 2.0.5 Fixes a recently introduced but serious crashing bug that happened when a blank recovery file was written under a particular set of circumstances and then the program attempted to read it in on start up. Judging from my crash logs, it appears that a number of you were bitten by this bug -- my apologies. If you ever experience crashing of FaultKin Mobile, please do not hesitate to report it on my support web page. This version has no new functionality but you will definitely want to download this one!
2.0.2

v. 2.0 -- Now with in-app mapping capabilities

• Display your fault slip data on a map or satellite image within the program from either the data list view or datum details view. From the data list view, you have the option of showing a separate fault plane solution (FPS) for each measurement or the average for all showing measurements calculated using an unweighted moment tensor sum. The FPS for a single datum or for the average of several measurement also shows the P and T axes.

• The RecoveryFile now records all of your changes and any existing recovery file is read in automatically when you launch the program, allowing you to resume wherever you left off even if iOS has purged the program from memory. The format of the Recovery file has changed slightly to accommodate these changes and FaultKin on the desktop will be changed to read in the new format.

• Minor bug fixes and improvements.

v. 1.1.0 -- The "finals are over and the semester is almost done, can't wait to go to the field" edition :)

• You can now choose the point symbols that you want to use for P- and T-axes. In the Settings View under the Appearance section, tap "Pick P- and T-axis symbols". A new view will appear where you can select the symbol you want for each type of axis.

• Minor cosmetic changes to the sizes of some point symbols.

• You can now assign a quality letter grade (A-F) for each fault slip datum using the new slider control in the "More Details" View.

• The Sharing Panel in the FaultKin stereonet view now actually sends a picture of what's on the screen rather than a blank stereonet as before.

• A bug in the "Fault from P & T Axes" calculation that would result in incorrect slip for one of the two nodal planes has been fixed.
