About Ah Chute

Part of the Indoor Recess Games CFS Bundle

A game designed to promote basic counting and number recognition. Ah Chute also helps children begin to organize numbers into groups of 5 and recognize “5 families” (e.g. 1 & 4, 2 & 3, 1 & 2 & 2, etc.).

Players press a Roll 'em button to find out how many chips to play. Then, the players take turns dragging chips from their stack of tiles to their oval holding areas. After both players have moved their chips to the holding area, the top will come off the chutes. Players then drag the chips to the top of the chutes and drop them. The goal is to have your chip be on the top of the chutes. The player with the most chips at the top of a chute wins. The iPad versions includes an option to use multi-value chips.

Designed as part of the NumberSense program at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL.

Fixed a screen display problem seen when using the app under iOS 10.

• Fixed an anomoly where it was possible to reset a turn and display the “Roll ‘em “ button again without moving any chips into the chutes. In other words... if you didn’t like your roll, you could get a new one. Yes, a couple of kindergarten students figured this out! I’m impressed.
• The option to use multi-value chips has been removed from the iPod/iPhone version.
• Minor tweaks. Updated interface.

Ah Chute 1.3.4

• Now compatible with the newest, 4th Generation iPad. Works on all previous generations of the iPad and the new iPad mini.
• Should also now work on the iPhone 5... However, I don’t have one to test it on. It does work on the newest iPod.
• in the iPad version, modified the placing of chips into chutes so that users can “drop” a chip anywhere on a chute. Our work with kindergarten students (especially early in the school year) has shown they want to put a chip in the right spot rather than drop it from the top of a chute. Dropping from the top of a chute still works.

• Now a plus app
• Fixed an error that allowed user to drop chips when the chutes were closed.
• Clarified how and when to discard multi-value chips.
1.2.1
Nov 16, 2011
• Added option to turn off chip resizing.
• Screen will now rotate between both horizontal orientations.
• Fixed a problem under iOS 5 where large portions of the screen would turn black.
• No longer works under iOS 3.x
1.1.0
Apr 27, 2011
Added an option to use chips with values from 1-5. Chips with values greater than one are labeled as such. When they are dropped above a chute the number of chips dropped into the chute matches the number on the chip. The game can still be played with all chips equal to 1.
