About Berlin Craft Beer

The app serves as a guide to the Berlin Craft Beer scene. It lists breweries, pubs and bars, restaurants and eateries, and shops which brew, serve and/or sell Craft Beer, and events focussing on craft beer.

The app lists these Craft Beer Places, as they are termed in the app, in two views:

• All craft beer places grouped by district (Mitte, Friedrichshain …)
• Only craft beer places open on the current day sorted by distance from the current location

Both views offer a search for name or district and by category (brewery, pub, restaurant, shop, event).

Each item in the list of places displays the distance from the current location to the respective craft beer place and the time from which the place is open.

By tapping on an item in the list of places, the properties of the chosen place are presented with greater detail on several tabs:

• The map tab shows a map with the surroundings of the craft beer place. When you tap on the icon for the underground train in the call-out of the needle apple maps is started with the request to show the route from your current location to the selected craft beer place.

• The information tab shows all details for the selected place, like name, name of owner, address, telephone, email, website, offered beers, offered kind of meals if any, seats available and so on.

• The link tab shows a list of external sources with further information for the selected place. Tapping on an item in the list opens Safari with the appropriate link, or activates the corresponding app with the entry for the selected craft beer place, if such an app is installed.

• The images tab shows a selection of images of the selected place if available. Images will be offered via a separate in-app purchase (not yet available). Sample images are installed for the place “Eschenbräu” in Wedding.

• The visits tab offers the possibility to record and later display one’s visit to craft beer places, including a personal rating for beer, meals, and ambiance. These personal ratings remain private and are not shared via the internet. The full functionality is available via a separate in-app purchase.

The app contains a database with about 90 craft beer places in Berlin and the neighbouring Potsdam. All data are stored in the app such that no data traffic is caused by using the app (except for map data). This way, the app usually feels less sluggish, the monthly mobile data allowance is preserved, and acces to the craft beer places’ data also works under poor or no mobile network coverage, like e.g. it is often experienced when travelling with the Underground.

This version is a major revision of the app and includes many changes, details can be found in the version history in the app.

Mar 17, 2020
• Many Adaptations to iOS 13 including support for dark mode.
• The master data of all craft beer places has been checked and, where necessary, refreshed and extended. Some craft beer places have been added, others have been removed or marked as closed.
• Improvements in the display of distances to the craft beer places, particularly with regard to the recalculation of distances when one moves with the iPhone through the city.
• In the view „All Craft Beer Places“, you can tap on a header with the name of a district if there is more than one craft beer place in the respective district. The name of the district appears in the then activated search field, and only the craft beer places in the respective district are shown. This way, you can much easier show all craft beer places in a district on the map.
• When starting the navigation to a craft beer place from the map, a selection menu is presented listing all installed and supported navigation apps. The app supports navigation with Apple Maps, DB Navigator, Google Maps, HERE WeGo, Maps.me, Navigon, Scout GPS, Sygic, Transit, Uber, and Waze. In case none of the supported navigation apps is installed, navigation starts immediately with Apple Maps without presenting a selection menu.

• The list of craft beer places now adpats better to larger font sizes. The data that previously was presented at the right margin of each list element (distance, opened from, rating) now is shown on a third line below the city district such that there is more room for each data element.

• Data of some craft beer places corrected respectively added („Meisterstück“ in Wilmersdorf is closed, new places added: bottleshop with taproom „Beer:eau“ in Mitte, craft beer bar „The Castle“ in Friedrichshain, breweries „Einbar" in Moabit and „Bräugier“ in Prenzlauer Berg, events „Gesundbrewing“, „Berliner Weiße Gipfel“ and „23. Internationales Berliner Bierfestival“).
• Added support for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR.
• Dropped support for iOS 9.x and removed all code for supporting iOS 9.x from app.

• New functionality has been added to be able to update the app's database online. This allows to distribute corrections and additions without necessitating a new version of the app. Once a day, the app now checks for the presence of possible updates. If so, the user will be notified about the details of changes before the update is downloaded and installed. Privacy and data protection: the check for updates is not recorded on the server supplying the updates, i.e. no user tracking, storage of the user's location, and similar activities take place.
• Implemented some corrections for notifications of events.
• Added a new craft beer place: Stone Brewing Tap Room in Prenzlauer Berg.
• Added a new event: Stadt Land Food in Kreuzberg.
• Corrected data of some craft beer places, added some links.

• Less often used functions of the app have been centralised into a menu which can be reached using the buttton on the right hand side of the navigation bar. This button replaces the help button previously located there. The menu has four entries: the first one provides access to help. The second grants access to the settings of the app (previously located in the navigation bar of the help screen). The third one gives access to the adminstration of In App Purchases, allowing to buy a product or to reload it from the App store. The last item allows to send feedback in the form of an email to the developer of the app.
• The Done button now always is located on the right hand side of the navigation bar (seems to be standard for many apps).
• The app makes use of new features of the map introduced with iOS 11: Places on the map now use marker bubbles instead of pins, under which—provided there's sufficient space—the name of the place is shown. A glyph within the marker indicates the kind of the place. If the map shows several craft beer places and the map would be too cluttered with markers, places will be put together and the marker will show the number of merged places. If you zoom into the map, clustered places will be shown separately again as space allows.
• The callout shown when tapping on such a cluster marker lists the names of the contributing places. The right margin of the callout carries a map symbol, which, when tapped, zooms into the map such that the contributing places are shown again.
• Starting with iOS 11, iPhones (except Plus models) show the tab bar with a smaller height than previously. To avoid an ugly cramped tab bar, the titles for the symbols in the tab bar are omitted when a smaller height tab bar is used.
• The map tab now shows the map in the maximum size possible: data which also can be found on the info tab has been removed and the selection and display of the kind of the used map is united in a segmented control in the upper right corner of the map. In addition, the tab bar is hidden when several craft beer places are shown on the map.
• An error has been corrected, which occured with iOS 11 in landscape orientation: the information tab of the craft beer details view no longer reacted on a touch gesture to make hidden bars (tab and navigation bar) visible again.
• Some events taking place in 2018 have been added.

• To assign rating stars in the function visits, you now can also use a pan gesture on the stars: wipe right to select more, left to select less stars. On devices with the Taptic Engine (from iPhone 6s onwards) haptic feedback is given when adding or removing stars with a pan gesture. While whiping, usually your finger covers the stars. Therefore, a small pop-up is presented indicating the number of stars set.
• In the list of all craft beer places the name of the district no longer is shown with each place, as it already is presented to the user in the group header.
• Corrected an error, which prevented writing and reading of the recorded visits to and from iCloud or file.
• The opening times from which the places in the list of craft beer places are opened (”from 14h“) are updated ever half hour. Times are replaced by the closing time (“till 22h”) in red if the closing time is known and the current clock is after the closing time.
• Some more improvements in layout and design.
• The Castle in Mitte (successor to The Castle Pub in Gesundbrunnen) is open, pub data updated.
2.0
May 18, 2017
• Corrected error causing crash under iOS 9.x.
• The app shows events having taken place in the past similar to closed places by displaying text and icon greyed out. It also does not show the distance to the event’s location.
• Opening times for events now are shown as the date (e g. 30 Apr) or the date range (e g. 21-30 Jul) on which the event takes place.
• The app now offers an additional view of craft beer places showing all places open on the current day and sorted by distance form the user’s current location. The shuffle icon shown on the left in the navigation bar serves to switch between the two possible views.
• The map tab now offers the possibility to switch between the different map types Apple Maps, OpenStreetMap (OSM), and Google Maps. In the top right corner the map shows which map type is used. Above this indication a button allows to switch to the next map type (OSM, Google, Apple).
• Many small improvements in layout, design, and typography.
• Split help into a short version for a fast overview and an elaborate version for more detail.
• Marked The Caste Pub in Gesundbrunnen as closed.
• Added shops Bierlinie in Prenzlauer Berg and BierKontor in Postdam.
• Added Brewery Braukunst Gebr. Wiestner in Wedding.
1.2
Apr 27, 2017
• The app now can treat closed craft beer places appropriately: closed places will be shown in the list of craft beer places less prominently using a grey type and without opening start time and distance. The corresponding information tab shows the closing date in red color, and details no longer valid are crossed out. The map tab shows the closing date instead of the opening times. Closed places are not shown on the maps showing several places (like all pubs or all breweries).
• An additional tab now presents a collection of external sources providing further information for the selected craft beer place. These sources are rating platforms (for beer or general), social networks, online magazines, newspapers and journals, and blogs. Touching an item in the list opens Safari with the appropriate link to the selected place or the corresponding app with the entry for the place if such an app is installed (e.g. Yelp and TripAdvisor).
• The app administers the additional category “Event” for events at which craft beers are presented. Such events usually last only for a couple of days per year and either take place at one distinct location or at a number of different locations throughout the town. In the first case the event can be shown on the map like any other place. In the second case the event either – if it should be shown in a collection of places like all places or all events – is not shown on the map, or – if it is the only place to be shown on the map – all locations which take part in the event are shown.
• The database of the app reflects some changes in the craft beer places:
- The craft beer bar “The Pier” in Berlin-Mitte is closed since end of January 2017.
- Due to termination of the rental agreement, the beer bar “Castle Pub” leaves its premises in Gesundbrunneb by the end of April 2017 and moves to Mitte close to Nordbahnhof (Invalidenstr. 129).
- The Brewery “Two Fellas” (and thus its taproom) no longer operates in the Castle Pub and currently looks for a new location.
- Renamed “Bierkombinat Kreuzberg” to “Schoppe Bräu Taproom im BKK”.
- Added craft beer places: breweries „Pirate Brew”, “Brewer‘s Tribute”, brewpubs “The Circus Hostel Brewing Company”, “Tentación Craft Beer”, and shop “Tante Frizzante”.
- Added craft beer events: “2. Friedrichsfelder Hofbierfest”, “21. Internationales Berliner Bierfestival”, “Berlin Beer Week 2017”, and “Handgemacht – Frühling 2017”.
