About iPlaya. Beach weather forecast

The coast of Spain, Portugal and Italy together have nearly 17600 kilometres with over 8000 beaches, some of which are among the best beaches in the world. And the best way to plan your next beach trip is having all the information at hand.

With iPlaya you'll have a thorough guide to all Spanish, Portuguese and Italian beaches, including all their features and services available in them, accurate hourly weather forecast, exclusive drone footage, and users' reviews and photos to help you make your choice.

If you've already used iPlaya before, you'll notice we’re working hard to offer more and better contents.
We want to help you discover the perfect beach for you, so we include curated lists of beaches with photos, drone footage, and enhanced descriptions. And you can still search by name, navigate the lists of provinces and towns, and see the list of nearby beaches.
And of course your list of favorites is there for quick one-tap access.

The home page is the starting point to discover the perfect beach for you. It’s divided into four sections:
- FEATURED is a dynamic section, which will grow periodically. In it you will find different types of content: lists of beaches grouped by some common criteria, reviews of specific beaches, stories about a coast area, etc.
- LISTS groups different ways of searching for beaches: by province or region, by proximity, beaches with drone videos, etc.
- MY BEACHES is your list, made up of the beaches that you mark as favorites.
- FIND allows you to search for beaches by name or by setting filters by characteristics or weather conditions.

Once you choose a beach, you’ll see a Summary with general info and links to the different sections:

- FORECAST, with hourly reports for temperature, sky conditions, water temperature, swell (wave height, period and direction), and wind (speed, direction, gusts). And daily reports for tides and astronomy data (sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset).
- List of TIDES for the next days.
- FEATURES includes a map showing the location of the beach and the distance from your current location (with the possibility of calculating the route to the beach by car or on foot, or launching the Maps app to get navigation). This section also includes a brief description of the beach, a list of general features (length, width, type of sand, etc.), a list of the main services available at the beach (showers, toilets, sports areas, etc.), info about accessing the beach and safety info. Moreover, it includes a new image gallery with information posters found at the beach. You can contribute your own photos to this gallery.
- RATINGS, which shows ratings, reviews and photos of the beach shared by users of the app. This is the section you can help grow by rating the beaches you know, writing reviews or uploading photos to share them with other users. (In order to send your ratings you must first login to your iPlaya account. Registering is super quick and easy!).
- IMAGE GALLERY.

From the Summary, you’ll be able to add the beach to your list of favorite beaches, warn us if you’ve spotted jellyfish over the last few hours, and share a photo or comment about the beach.

Don't forget to 'starfish' your favorite beaches. The list will be available on your Apple Watch app so you'll get a summarized forecast on your wrist!

Get iPlaya now and enjoy your holidays!

iPlaya Premium includes:
• Hourly weather forecast for up to 10 days.
• Tide data for up to 10 days.
• Videos of some beaches, including dron footage.
• Additional contents that we keep creating: better beach descriptions, translations, new lists, etc.

What's New in the Latest Version 7.2.1

Last updated on Apr 28, 2024
Old Versions
Hello, beach lovers! In version 7.2.0, we’ve added a whole lot of changes. The most important one is the new Advanced Forecast section. This feature is for Premium users, who can now see every last detail of the hourly forecast. This feature will be ideal for those who need to know all the data about the waves, but it also has extra data that all of you will be interested in. The section contains the following hourly data in a table: sky conditions icon, temperature, cloud cover, humidity, precipitation, air pressure, visibility, UV index, direction, speed and gusts of wind, direction, height and period of the waves, direction, height and period of swell, direction, height and period of wind waves, water temperature, and tide status.
Additionally, we have fixed a problem with the widgets where some data was not displaying correctly, another issue that occurred when trying to mark a beach in Italy as a favourite, and we have made small tweaks here and there to improve the app experience.
We hope you like all the new features and that you are already enjoying all those from the previous versions. What do you think of the topographic maps? Have you had a chance to use them for any hikes along the coast? If so, tell us about it!
We are fully into spring, so everyone, enjoy the beach with the warm weather!

7.1.0

Hello everyone! In version 7.1.0, we've made a lot of changes. The most noticeable one is that we've redesigned the beach summary page to offer you more information and make it look a lot nicer :) You'll see that now for Spanish beaches, you can view the topographic map of the beach area. This is a feature for Premium users that we believe will be very useful, both when you go to beaches you didn't know and to discover more details about the ones you frequently visit. In topographic maps, you can see the contour lines with altitude indicators, where paths and trails run, and the shape of cliffs and islets. We're sure you'll find it very interesting!
Additionally, we've changed the data source for the UV index and for the sunrise and sunset times, as well as moon times, so they're always available.
As you know, in the latest updates we've made many changes, and we continue to work to improve the app even more. For now, we’d like to remind you that you can try the new Apple Watch app, which offers more forecasts in a much clearer way, and that the app now also includes beaches from Italy (in addition to Spain and Portugal). Oh, and we encourage you to discover the recommended activities, which we are gradually adding to some beaches.
As we always tell you, we appreciate it when you rate the beaches you know and share photos of them so that other users can get a better idea of what they're like. We hope you can enjoy the beach now that the longer days and spring weather make it so appealing.

Hello everyone! We hope you're eager for the beach. Whether you have it "on your doorstep" or if you want to plan a getaway because it's further away, in version 7.0 we bring you A LOT of new features that you're SURE to love:
- New app for Apple Watch: we've completely redesigned the app so you can have more information, more clearly, and it's easier to consult on your wrist. Now, for each of your favourite beaches, you can check on your watch: 1. Current data on sky condition, temperature, water temperature, humidity, precipitation, and visibility, 2. Sunrise and sunset times, moonrise and moonset times, and the UV index, 3. Wave height and swell direction, 4. Wind speed and direction, and 5. Data on sky condition, temperature, wave height and direction and UV index for the coming hours.
- Beaches of Italy: iPlaya is growing, and our beach database is not falling behind. Spain, Portugal, and now Italy, so you can enjoy the sea wherever you go. If you know some of the new beaches, we’d love it if you could rate them, so that this part of the app can gradually grow. Many thanks in advance.
- Italian: now that we have Italian beaches, we've added another language to the app. As you know, you can set your preferred language for the app in Settings.
- Recommended Activities: now, for some beaches, we have selected activities that we think might interest you (that kayak excursion to see the most hidden coves, the boat ride to see the coast from another point of view). We will be adding these recommendations little by little, depending on the season.
- In addition, we have made small adjustments and improvements to the iOS app so that everything works wonderfully.

In version 7.0.1 we have increased the number of forecast hours that Premium users can view on the Apple Watch app.

Hi there! How’re you doing? We know the last couple of summers haven’t been the best for some of you. We really hope you enjoy this one!

Summer's almost here! We hope you're making plans to spend a few days at the beach this season. Don't forget to share your ratings and images of the beaches you visit ;) In this version, we've added a button to open the 'rate this beach' page from the summary of a beach to make it easier to post a photo.
We've also included a button to request that we delete your iPlaya user account and any associated data (ratings, images) directly from the "Edit your profile" page. (Bear in mind that this does not affect subscriptions; you can have an active subscription without an iPlaya user account, and you can have an iPlaya user account to rate beaches and upload photos without being subscribed to the app. Subscriptions can be managed from your iCloud account).
Thanks for your comments and suggestions. We're glad to read them at hola@iplaya.es

6.1.0
Sep 20, 2021
This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Summer’s almost gone… we hope you’ve enjoyed the app over the last few months and are ready to keep discovering beaches and interesting places with it.
Here’s what’s new in this version:
We’ve made some small tweaks to adapt the app to iOS 15.
We’ve included a couple of labels to clarify the contents of the app for Apple Watch.
We’ve improved the descriptions for some beaches, including translations into English, French, and Portuguese.
We’ve also made some modifications to the services offered at some beaches that we know have changed thanks to your feedback.
And that’s all for now. We keep working on new contents and functionalities that we’ll show you in the coming months. Of course, we’ll regularly post new lists and stories in the Featured section to help you discover new beaches.

Version 6.0.4 had an issue that could save incomplete info when registering a new user and crash the app. It's already solved; sorry to anyone affected by this issue.

We don’t want to bore you with updates, but we continue to add improvements to the app, including new information in the database, and modifying data that’s changed (thanks for your feedback!) Happy summer!
6.0.3
Aug 2, 2021
We've fixed an issue that made the app crash in certain cases when registering a new user.

Version 6.0
A new summer is here and with it a lot of new app features that we hope you’ll like and find useful.
iPlaya has an ever-expanding catalog of beaches, with new additions in each update. Therefore, it’s essential that you can easily find YOUR beach. That has been the main focus of this update. We have divided the home page of the app into 4 sections focused on finding beaches in different ways:
FEATURED is a section that we’ve been thinking of incorporating into the app for a long time. It’s a dynamic section, which will grow on a regular basis. In it you will find different types of content: lists of beaches grouped by some common crieria, reviews of specific beaches, stories about a coast area, etc. It’s something we’re working hard on and that we hope you’ll find interesting and enjoy.
In LISTS you’ll find the different ways of searching for beaches that we had in previous versions of the app: by province or region, by proximity, etc.
MY BEACHES is your list, the one that you create by marking your favorite beaches. It is now an independent section, in full screen and with larger images.
Finally, FIND is an improved version of the old search engine that we think many of you will find much more practical. You can search beaches by name like before, and you will see the results ordered by distance from your position. On top of that, we have added a filtering functionality, in case you don’t know the name of the beach but are interested in discovering nearby beaches with certain features or that meet certain conditions. Would you like to look for sandy beaches, or for beaches that have a blue flag? Now it's easier than ever. Are you looking for a beach where the water is not too cold or where the waves are not too high? Now you can see a list of the beaches with the forecast that interests you.
We have maintained the structure and functionalities of the rest of the app, so that you do not miss ANYTHING, and we have added improvements to the contents, incorporating new beaches, modifying the details that have changed in some beaches (THANK YOU for notifying us when there are changes in the beaches you know), including the new 2021 blue flags.
On the other hand, this summer there will be fewer restrictions on the beaches, although it will still be necessary to take some measures and in certain cases it may be necessary to limit the capacity in the most popular beaches. For this reason, we have kept the section on safety measures, in order to update this information.
We hope you’ll like all the new functionalities and that you’ll enjoy the beach with iPlaya by your side.

Dec 9, 2020
We've made three different Widgets that you can add to your Home Screen to see at a glance what the weather is currently like at the beach of your choice:
- the GENERAL Widget shows the state of the sky, current temperature, wave height and direction, and wind speed and direction,
- the WIND Widget shows wind speed, direction, and gusts,
- and the WATER widget shows water temperature, and wave height, period and direction.
We hope you'll find them useful. We're planning to add more so stay tuned!
5.4.4
Sep 19, 2020
- We’ve made a quick fix for an issue when showing the hourly temperature on iPad running iOS 14.
- We’ve increased the number of days with tide info for Premium users. Now you can check height and times for high and low tides for 15 days.
- We’ve included a number of new beaches, and updated the information on facilities found on some beaches. Thanks for your contributions both through the form in the app and by email.

***We’re working on some new features we know you’re going to love. Stay tuned!

Thank you all for helping us improve iPlaya year after year. Thanks for your photos and ratings of beaches, for your feedback, and especial thanks to our subscribers for trusting this project.
As always, if you have any doubts or suggestions, please let us know at hola@iplaya.es
5.4.3
Aug 15, 2020
Version 5.4
- We have prepared the app to show the color of the flag that flies on the beach, and we hope that we can get access to data on more beaches little by little. At last! It is a functionality that many of you had asked for ... now the goal is to get this data for all the beaches that have a flag!
- We continue to contact the municipalities that are taking special safety measures on their beaches to show the data in the app. Now you can check real-time occupation data by sector (on top of the average value for the beach) in those beaches that have been divided into sectors (such as beaches in Gijón).
- And we are improving our database with the feedback that you have been giving us from the new button on the features page. Thank you!

Version 5.3
We’re including relevant information about the safety measures and restrictions put in place to access beaches during summer 2020. You can check the current occupancy of Portuguese beaches, and we’re adding information provided by Spanish municipalities.
In beaches that have some type of info about safety measures, you’ll see a new section on the Summary view for the beach that will take you a page with the information that we’ve gathered on this topic (an image of the information poster, the current occupancy at the beach, its capacity in 2020, its normal capacity, any additional information, and/or a relevant link.

Version 5.2
We keep improving our database, and since last summer, we’ve been adding Portuguese beaches. You can search them by name, but also in the list of provinces or regions. In the Provinces list you’ll see the flag of the country on the top right corner. Tap on the flag to change the country where you’d like to search. We’ll be adding beautiful Portuguese beaches to the Discover section too.
We’ve changed the interface of the beach detail view to improve navigation. Now on opening the page you’ll see a summary with general info about the beach and links to all the detailed sections: weather forecast, tide data, map and features, ratings, and image gallery. Also, from the summary you’ll be able to add the beach to your list of favourite beaches, warn us if you’ve spotted jellyfish over the last few hours, or write a review of the beach.
We’ve added a new image gallery in the Features section to display information posters found at the beach. These can convey additional information to that in the list of features, and can be useful to warn about especial restrictions or exceptional regulations set by each township this summer. Here you can add photos of this type of posters. We’ll try to add relevant info too. This is going to be an unusual summer, in which our trips to the beach may be different to what we’re used to. We hope that this new feature can help in this situation.
We’ve also improved the app for the Apple Watch, where you can now check the hourly forecast for the next 24 hours (water temperature, swell height, swell period, wind speed, wind direction, and wind gusts), plus the general sky conditions, maximum and minimum temperature for today.

Thank you all for helping us improve iPlaya year after year. Thanks for your photos and ratings of beaches, and especial thanks to our subscribers for trusting this project.
