Maui Waena Intermediate School is located in a residential area of Kahului in central Maui. The community of Kahului was originally planned to provide residences for families of plantation workers. It has since grown and developed to include families of various occupations and socioeconomic standings. Kahului includes low-income, moderate income, and middle income families. MWIS meets Title I requirements with 36.17% of students receiving free/reduced lunches. Our feeder schools, Kahului School, Pomaikai School and Lihikai School, qualify for Title I funding as well.
Since the last self-study in 2001, MWIS has had two new principals and eight administrators (one principal and two vice principals) and two curriculum coordinators. A testing coordinator, two high-risk counselors, an additional English Language Learner (ELL) teacher, and technology coordinator has also been added to our staff. Also implemented since the last self-study are the School Community Council (SCC), Content Mastery Center (CMC), Positive Behavior System (PBS), and the Renaissance Program. Of the teaching staff, 54% have been at MWIS for five or more years and the average number of yeas of teaching experience is 9.5 years. Each year, one to two teachers retire and two to three either transfer or are bumped out by tenured teachers from other schools. Currently, the percentage of teachers meeting NCLB requirements is 87%. Maui Waena also has eight paraprofessionals who meet the requirements of NCLB.
