Partly Sunny has been featured by Apple, MacStories, AppAdvice, and Lifehacker.

Partly Sunny “introduces a robust, beautiful new way to view weather information. […] What’s immediately striking about Partly Sunny’s design is that it feels designed to belong in iOS. It’s an app that feels built by Apple if the company decided to make a massive iterative change to its own stock Weather app.” – Jake Underwood, MacStories

“If you are looking for minimalism in your weather app, then Partly Sunny will satisfy your cravings. […] Partly Sunny offers the information you need in a concise and flexible way.” – Christine Chan, AppAdvice

What's New in the Latest Version 1.4.11

Last updated on May 10, 2023
Old Versions
This update has some radar-map additions & changes and some bug fixes.

Radar Changes
Partly Sunny’s radar-data provider made some changes that resulted in the map layers for severe-weather warnings, storm cells, and advisories not fully loading their data. Unfortunately I had to remove the advisories layer as a result. The warnings and storm-cells layers, though, are still available but are updated to use slightly different data.

Radar Additions
There are also some new map layers. For US locations, there’s a new radar & clouds layer. For locations in Europe, the radar & warnings layer is now also available. And for locations worldwide, there’s a new temperatures layer and wind-speeds layer.

Also, when the warnings layer is selected, there’s a new button in the radar view to swap the layer positions. By default, precipitation radar is on top of the warnings layer, but to better see the warnings that may be covered by the radar layer, you can swap the layers so warnings are on top.

Apple Weather Fix
The issue where Apple Weather forecasts might not display properly for some users should be fixed. Turns out working with dates, times, and time zones is… hard. Hahaha. (Thanks, Michael!)

Part Two of the post-Dark-Sky update! Partly Sunny is now powered by Apple Weather—which brings back hourly graphs for each day this week and yesterday’s weather!

Apple Weather
Forecasts in Partly Sunny are now powered by Apple Weather, Apple’s replacement for Dark Sky. For Partly Sunny Club members, if you prefer OpenWeather forecasts, you can change data providers in Settings.

Hourly Graphs
When Apple Weather is selected as the data source, hourly graphs are back in Day View. So when you select a day in Week View, forecast details for the day once again include an hourly graph of temperatures & conditions. (And as a reminder, you can tap anywhere on the graph to change the data point, and you can touch & hold to show details for the hour and then drag left & right to see other hours.)

Yesterday’s Weather
Also when Apple Weather is selected, Week View can once again show yesterday for quick comparisons. Enable it in Settings > Daily Forecasts. (Partly Sunny Club required.)

Day View
In Day View, new back & forward buttons show the previous & next days without having to go back to Week View to select a new day. You can also swipe left & right to change days and use the Left Arrow & Right Arrow keys on an external keyboard.

Text Summaries
Text summaries for today & tomorrow are expanded and a little more specific in some cases. For example, they now support summaries like “Partly sunny today and tomorrow, and light rain tomorrow night.” and “Partly sunny today, and light rain tonight and tomorrow morning.”

1.4.8
Mar 31, 2023
This update moves Partly Sunny to a new data provider. Forecasts were powered by Dark Sky, but Apple is sadly shutting it down, so now forecasts are powered by OpenWeather (Apple Weather support will come in a future update).

Partly Sunny was really built around and for Dark Sky weather data, so with a new data provider, unfortunately some things are different or temporarily missing because they aren’t supported by OpenWeather:
• Today View can only show up to 48 hours of hourly data
• Week View can’t show yesterday’s weather
• Day View doesn’t show hourly data for the selected day
• Time Machine isn’t available

I’m hopeful, though, to bring these features back in a future update.

Radar Updates:

Previously, precipitation radar was only available in the US, the UK, parts of Canada & Europe, and a few other places. Now it’s available for locations worldwide.

Also available worldwide is a new layer to show tropical storms, hurricanes, and cyclones.

For US locations, there’s a new layer to show storms and storm trajectories.

And for locations in Canada and Europe, there’s a new advisories layer to show advisories for rain, snow, flooding, wind, etc.

Day View Updates:

Day View doesn’t show hourly data currently, but it does now show temperatures throughout the day and automatically shows all available conditions. Plus more detailed moon data is available again with an updated moon API from the U.S. Naval Observatory.

—————

Thank you to everyone at Dark Sky for all your work over the years. Not only did you power the forecasts in Partly Sunny for so long, you helped power my dream several years ago of learning how to make an iPhone app and becoming an app developer. Without the easy-to-use Dark Sky API, I probably wouldn’t have built Partly Sunny back then. So thank you for helping me on my journey to where I am today.

And thank YOU for using and supporting Partly Sunny! Even when the weather isn’t enjoyable, I hope you enjoy checking the weather with Partly Sunny. Stay tuned for more updates later this year!

1.4.6
Nov 16, 2021
It’s been a while, but I’m back with another Partly Sunny update! This update is focused on fixes—and lots of them! Next, I plan on adding Home Screen widgets and updating the Shortcuts support.

What’s fixed in this update:
• Layout and sizing issues on iOS and iPadOS 15 are fixed.
• The calendar button to check past or future weather correctly shows the date picker again.
• Keyboard shortcuts that use arrow keys work on iPadOS 15.
• In Today View, the occasional extra space between the hourly graph and the toolbar is fixed.
• Week View on iPad in landscape orientation uses vertical bars instead of horizontal bars.
• Previewing a day in Week View on iPhone 8/SE properly sizes elements in the preview.
• Radar and alerts views use standard iOS modals.
• Buttons and other elements have iPadOS pointer effects.

As part of the effort to update the app and prepare for new widgets and Shortcuts actions, Partly Sunny now requires iOS 14 or higher.

Thank you for using and supporting Partly Sunny! Even when the weather isn’t enjoyable, I hope you enjoy checking the weather with Partly Sunny!

1.4.5
Nov 16, 2019
This update has a few more iOS 13 goodies plus some fixes!

NEW: If you’re on iOS or iPadOS 13, there are new context menus in Locations View and Week View. Tap and hold on a location or a day for a detailed preview of the forecast. (This is similar to the 3D Touch peek & pop previews in iOS 12 and lower, but they also work on iPad now too. If you have a 3D Touch device on iOS 12 or lower, you can still peek & pop.)

FIX: Some things (like the current location icon in Siri Shortcuts) weren’t set to the correct color when the app is set to follow the iOS 13 system dark mode appearance, but now they are.

FIX: On iPadOS 13, the widget no longer shows too many squished cells.

FIX: The current pressure indicator (the trend arrow looking three hours ahead) in Today View is back, and it will now appear in Siri Shortcuts too when the current pressure is shown.

NEW: iOS 13’s new inset grouped table view style is now used throughout settings and settings submenus as well as in the views to edit the locations list and locations.

1.4.4
Sep 20, 2019
Partly Sunny now supports iOS 13 system dark mode in the app, widget, and Siri Shortcuts. The widget and Siri Shortcuts will automatically match the system dark mode setting. To have the app match…

If you’re on iOS 13, in Settings > Dark Mode, there’s a new option to match the app’s dark mode to the system setting. If you don’t want to use the system setting, dark mode can still be customized to use dark gray or black base colors and to toggle on demand, automatically based on screen brightness, or automatically at sunrise and sunset.

The Settings, Edit List, and Edit Location views use the new iOS 13 draggable modal functionality. Drag down on the views to dismiss them. (You can still do this on iOS 12, but it’s much better now in iOS 13.)

Stay tuned for more iOS 13 support!

———

In case you missed what was new recently in Partly Sunny, here are some highlights:

In Settings > Temperatures, there’s a new toggle to simultaneously show the current actual and “feels like” temperatures in Locations View and the widget.

For Partly Sunny Club subscribers, there’s a new popup view to customize the weather map layer and other map settings.

For locations in the US, there’s a new Radar & Warnings layer in Map Settings to show severe weather warnings on the map in addition to radar. (Partly Sunny Club required.)

For locations in the US and Canada, there’s a new Advisories layer in Map Settings to show weather advisories on the map like “heat advisory”, “air quality alert”, and “wind chill advisory”. (Partly Sunny Club required.)

In Map Settings, you can now customize the selected weather layer to be more or less transparent, the starting zoom level of the map to be a little more zoomed in or out, and the type of map (standard, satellite, or hybrid). (Partly Sunny Club required.)

In case you missed what was new in Partly Sunny 1.4, here are some highlights:

Siri Shortcuts
Ask Siri to check the weather for you! Siri can check today’s weather (the current, hourly, and day’s weather), tomorrow’s weather, this week’s weather, and various current weather conditions (like humidity, chance of precipitation, and UV index).

The shortcuts will appear in Settings app (where you can set up voice phrases for Siri to check the weather without launching the app) and Shortcuts app when you view locations in Today View and tap hourly graphs to change the condition. (Note: Siri Shortcuts require iOS 12.)

Siri Shortcuts Settings
There’s a new menu in Settings to manage Siri Shortcuts. For each of your locations, you can manually have shortcuts appear in Settings app and Shortcuts app. You can also add or edit voice phrases for Siri without having to go to Settings app.

Precipitation Radar in Europe
If you’re a member of the Partly Sunny Club, your locations in the UK, Ireland, Germany, northern France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland can now show precipitation radar. My radar data provider says more countries are on the way, so stay tuned for more.

Easier Locations Management
In Locations View, you can now swipe left on a location to edit or delete it. You can also now tap and hold a location and then drag it up or down to reorder it. (Requires iOS 11 or higher.)

The four conditions in Today View and Day View are now tappable to show the other four. Set the order of the conditions in Settings > Conditions. (Thanks, Stephen S!)

More Temperatures in Day View
Day View now has an additional label to show “feels like” or actual high & low temperatures depending on which temperature mode you have selected.

Pressure Trend
The current pressure condition in Today View now includes a trend arrow looking three hours ahead. (Thanks, Brad G & Stephen S!)

More App Icons
Partly Sunny Club members have three more alternate app icons to choose from: Evening, Eclipse, and Six Colors. Also, Fiery and Blanc icons have slight color adjustments.

Severe Weather Alerts
Regions in severe weather alerts are now collapsed by default if there are more than two regions. (Thanks, Nick L!)

Other Fixes and Improvements

• Fixed the current temperature and icon in Today View getting excessively shrunk in iPad Slide Over when the precipitation graph is shown
• Fixed animations in Locations View when each location shows its forecast
• Widget in landscape mode on iPhone no longer shows too many hours and days

Buttons in the top navigation bars and bottom toolbars now use clearer and more standard icons.

Pull-to-Refresh
Partly Sunny Club members can now pull-to-refresh in Location Details view to refresh the location’s forecast on demand.

Location Searching
Searching for a location is now greatly improved and more reliable. In addition to cities, you can now search for places (like “Apple Park” or “Old Faithful”) and specific addresses. You can also now edit a location from the search results before adding it: tap the ‘i’ button to the right of any search result to fine-tune and rename the location.

Temperature Tweaks and Fixes
The display of daily forecasts’ temperatures has been simplified to avoid confusion when the overnight low is higher than the daytime high. Daily charts also now better handle that scenario.

Tweaks to Severe Weather Alerts
Long lists of regions in severe weather alerts are now collapsed by default. Tap on “Show More” to see the full list.

More fixes:
• An occasional bug with the precipitation display in Day View
• Using Time Machine to get weather for 31 December
• The severe-weather-alerts icon in Location Details not always clearing when the location’s forecast is refreshed and the location no longer has alerts
• Inconsistencies with external-keyboard shortcuts to make them more standard and consistent

• Partly Sunny Club: Subscribe for interactive radar, yesterday’s weather, time machine, more saved locations, and custom app icons & colors.
• More Device Support: iPhone X and Slide Over & Split View on iPad.
• More Customizations: Change the condition alongside high and low temperatures in daily forecasts and the condition below hourly graphs.
• More More More: Dark Mode automation, a darker Dark Mode, better location naming, moonrise and moonset times, iMessage stickers, and keyboard shortcuts.

Here’s a detailed look at what’s new:

Introducing the Partly Sunny Club! With a monthly or yearly subscription, you can unlock even more features:

Interactive Radar
Precipitation imagery is available for locations in the U.S., Canada, Australia, South Korea, and northern Mexico. Cloud imagery is available for locations worldwide.

Yesterday’s Weather
Show yesterday in daily charts for quick comparisons.

Time Machine
Get the weather for a day in the future or the past. Future days show the usual weather for that day, and past days show the historic weather.

More Locations
Save five more locations in your locations list.

Custom App Icon & Theme
Customize the Partly Sunny icon on your Home screen and widget. Some icons have a matching theme color for the app, too. (Requires iOS 10.3 or later.)

Whether or not you’re part of the Club, there are many more new features:

More Device Support
iPhone X is now fully supported. On iPad, you can now use Partly Sunny with Slide Over and Split View.

More Customization
The condition that displays with high and low temperatures in daily forecasts and the condition that displays below hourly graphs can now be customized in Settings.

More Dark Mode Options
In addition to being toggled manually, Dark Mode can now be toggled automatically based on your device’s screen brightness or your selected location’s sunrise and sunset times. Also, if you prefer a darker Dark Mode, Eclipse Mode is now an option.

Daily Highs and Lows
Highs and lows in daily forecasts will now show the daytime high and overnight low instead of the highest and lowest temperatures at any point during the day. This was an update with Dark Sky, Partly Sunny’s data provider, that is now supported in the app.

Moon Times
Moonrise and moonset times can now be displayed in Day View when tapping a day in daily charts. You can toggle them on in Settings.

Better Location Naming
Automatic location naming is greatly improved. When getting your current location, editing the map position for a location, or adding a new location, the location’s default name is now more reliable and more accurate. In addition, default location names will now display in the language of your device. Location names not already in the language of your device will automatically be converted. You still can provide a custom name and map position for each location by going to Edit List and tapping the “i” next to each location.

Design Tweaks
Text is slightly bolder throughout the app and widget. Blue precipitation text in the widget is now gray to improve legibility against dark wallpapers.

iMessage Stickers
An iMessage sticker pack is now included and contains many of the icons in the app plus a few extras.

Keyboard Shortcuts
If you have a hardware keyboard attached to your device, keyboard shortcuts are now available throughout the app.

If you have a question or suggestion, please email support@partlysunnyapp.com.

1.1
Feb 1, 2017
*** Known issue *** After updating to 1.1, if the widget shows a wonky forecast instead of your Current Location forecast, follow these steps to get it working again:
1. Open Partly Sunny.
2. Go to Settings > Widget Location.
3. Select any location (including Current Location).
4. Check the widget. It should be working normally again.

——————————

This update is packed with many new features, changes, and fixes. In the app, you can always see what’s new by going to Settings > What’s New.

What’s new:
• Turn those iPads sideways! Landscape orientation on iPad is now supported. (Support for Split View and Slide Over coming in a future update.)
• Current Location can be turned off in Edit Locations.
• The widget location is now customizable either in Settings or by tapping the “i” next to a location in Edit Locations.
• The “location services disabled” message will no longer repeatedly show.
• Hour-by-hour graphs better plot non-temperature conditions. No more misleading graph spikes and dips.
• Hour-by-hour graph headers now include the day being viewed and remain stationary as the graph scrolls.
• Added option in Settings to use actual or “feels like” temperatures in the app and widget. If “feels like” temperatures are selected, thermometer icons will be colored yellow instead of red. Temperatures can also be switched in List View, Location View, and Day View by swiping right with two fingers for “feels like” temperatures or left with two fingers for actual temperatures.
• UV index is now an option for hour-by-hour graphs.
• The four conditions that appear under the current temperature in Location View and under the high and low temperatures in Day View can be customized in Settings.
• The severe-weather-alerts popup now includes a tappable index for locations with multiple alerts.
• Fixed bottom of widget in condensed mode occasionally getting cut off on some devices.
• Fixed widget precipitation-intensity graph sometimes exaggerating hourly precipitation.
• Icons in the day-to-day graph are larger.
• Hour-by-hour graphs on iPhone 6 Plus and 7 Plus contain an additional hour.
• 3D Touch app-icon shortcuts display a fifth location instead of “Add Location” if there are five or more saved locations.
• Tweaked dark-theme colors.
• Changed mixed-precipitation icon for clarity.
• Miscellaneous fixes for coaching labels, adding locations, and graph bars.

1.0.2
Dec 13, 2016
• Improved widget performance to address it occasionally appearing blank or displaying “Unable to load”.
• Forecast summaries now account for selected units at the time the forecast is retrieved. For example, if kilometers are selected in the app’s settings, new forecast summaries that include snowfall will be in centimeters instead of inches.
• Added meters-per-second (m/s) as a wind-speed option when measurement units are set to kilometers.
• More metric improvements.
• Fixed bug with adding locations with the 3D Touch app-icon shortcut.
• Visibility distance in location view no longer displays 0 if the data is unavailable.
• Taught the widget to speak Italian when retrieving forecasts independent of the app.
• More Italian localization. Grazie Giovanni and Stefano!
• Fresh installations of the app will now use the device’s region to set default temperature, measurement, and wind units. Units remain customizable in the app’s settings.
1.0.1

• Partly Sunny now speaks Italian. Grazie a Lorenzo for the Italian localization!
• Improved accuracy of hour-by-hour and day-by-day graphs when plotting in Celsius and kilometers.
• Improved time formatting when using 24-hour clocks.
• Changed kilometers-per-hour abbreviation to use more standard “km/h”.
• Rearranged Settings “About” section and added “What’s New” to view the what’s-new popup again and “Privacy Policy” to view the Partly Sunny privacy policy (was previously and still is viewable on partlysunnyapp.com and the App Store).
• Fixed issue where non-specific locations like entire countries could be added to the locations list. Trying to get the weather for “Canada”, for example, just doesn’t work.
