About PhotoCompute

PhotoCompute introduces you to the interactions between your camera equipment and the underlying mathematics. It also provides better algorithms for computing DOF, distance to subject, etc., for macro distances than standard programs.

You need to install your camera body, lenses, extension tubes, and flash units into the program. This allows for accurate computations, and makes it easy to select different combinations of equipment. This may take a few minutes, but once accomplished you don't need to do it again.

Even if you have a complex macro setup involving multiple flashes and extension tubes, it will provide a reasonable starting point for possible exposures at various fStops, speeds, and flash power settings.

PhotoCompute provides a full toolbox of photographic calculations that can't be fully listed within this site. Please go to the Web page to look at a fuller description of the app, and a lot of screenshots to get a sense of what else the app can do.

Subject distance is now saved after the iPhone was turned off.
If the equations database has not been updated, the first equation listed will not be interpreted as "all equations", but will show the correct equation.
All settings, including focal length, will be restored if requested after exposure is unlocked.
All settings are now correctly saved between screens and app invocations.
If exposure was locked and a flash unit was active, changing the ISO did not always give the correct fStop. This has been fixed.
Settings are now restored in Calc+ when the help system is closed.
Misc. bug fixes and interface improvements.
1.74
Apr 7, 2015
An issue with the lambda (wavelength) setting being saved correctly has been fixed.
In Calc+ the blur sliders now operate more efficiently.
In Calc+ values are now highlighted in blue for increased readability.
In DOF+ the pupil ratio settings are now saved.
In DOF+ the button to set distance to hyperfocal(HF button) is hidden when distance is being calculated; the button is hidden now in all cases when HF is undefined.
In DOF+ a problem with pupil magnification being used correctly in calculations has been fixed.
Minor additional bug fixes.
1.73
Jun 19, 2014
Improved accuracy of calculations.
Better retention of settings.
1.72
Jun 7, 2014
The near focal distance algorithm has been adjusted to more accurately calculate near distances at different subject focal distances.
DOF+ settings are now correctly retained.
Added an HF button to enable the user to set the subject (focal) distance to the hyperfocal distance.
A custom circle of confusion value can now be manually entered in Equipment.
Emailing an equation now sends an attachment that preserves the original html formatting.
1.71
May 17, 2014
Fixed a rounding error that could cause a flash unit that has high sync speed capability to be incorrectly placed in high sync speed mode. (If this occurred, the exposure calculated would create an overexposure because an incorrect assignment to high speed sync would underestimate the flash intensity and .)

Improved two Solver functions: Filter exposure adjustment and the fStop calculator utilities.

Pupil ratios in DOF+ were not being retained when a new view was selected. This has been fixed.

Minor coding improvements.
1.70
May 1, 2014
The iPhone camera can now be used to obtain exposures in Calc+ and two solver functions: Fill flash and filter adjustment screens.
Editing a field is now cancelled by selecting another view or subview in Calc+.
Input field editing is now better restricted to appropriate keystrokes, depending on the quantity being entered.
Zoom flash labels are reversed to better reflect their meanings.
Equation listings in Calc+ could show some DOF+ equations, and vice versa. This has been resolved.
The on-camera flash distance now always shows the camera-subject distance in Calc+.
Exposure text box and slider in the Exposure view in Calc+ were not adequately responsive. This has been fixed.
Under some macro conditions the minimum and maximum distances could be reversed. This should no longer occur.
The Auto and Manual labels in the Zoom flash window in Calc+ are reversed, to better reflect their meanings.
1.61
Apr 1, 2014
Info fields are now being updated correctly.
Minor adjustments were made to initializations in solver functions so that output fields don't show invalid values.
1.6
Mar 27, 2014
The algorithms for computing focal parameters have been improved. More accurate results are obtained when combining an extension tube and teleconverter.
The equation dictionary has been improved, describing more accurately and completely how results are obtained.
A screen for assisting with filter exposure adjustment was added to the Solver. An exposure compensation factor can be entered along with an exposure taken without the filter, and the speed, fStop, and/or ISO can be adjusted to match the required filter factor.
Various improvements and minor bug fixes.
1.5
Dec 17, 2013
The focal length is now correctly restored after relaunch.
The circle of confusion is now specified when installing a camera body in the equipment database.
Hyperfocal distances are now computed using the estimated effective focal length (i.e., the focal length the lens is actually operating at) and not just the full rated focal length of the lens.
Blur diameter processing was improved. The Blur subview was slightly redesigned to accommodate better infinity distance processing. In particular, the front blur distance was redefined to operate from the camera position instead of relative to the subject.
More informative output is provided in Solver/Fill flash when none of the examined camera/flash combinations meet the criteria for a correct exposure.
A new exposure setting is now correctly saved after turning Lock Exposure off and changing the settings.
Many bug fixes and improvements in equation view formatting and processing.
Equation views can now be emailed. There is an option for processing all equation views at once.
Equation views can now process multiple equations. This will simplify the equation listing, allowing for more information on each page.

Improved flash calculations for high speed flash and macro exposures.
Added a high-speed sync flash factor to the Equipment database for flash units that improves the accuracy of calculations for high-speed flash exposures.
Exposure settings are now saved when Exposure Lock is turned on. When Exposure Lock is turned off, the user is prompted as to whether initial settings should be restored if they had changed from the original values.
Rewrote the solver fill flash function, which now provides a wide range of exposures for fill flash in both bright light and low light conditions.
Full numeric values are now stored in DOF+ instead of relying on values entered in text fields, which had created minor rounding errors.
