About Photographer's Ephemeris 3D

3D Sun, Moon and Night Photography Planning For Outdoor Photographers.

The Photographer's Ephemeris 3D (TPE 3D) is a unique natural light visualization tool for outdoor and landscape photographers shooting in varied terrain. It's a 3D map-centric Sun, Moon and Milky Way calculator: see how the light will fall on the land, day or night, for any location on earth.

"TPE3D predicted the light in the distance in the gap just before the right most hill very accurately." - OnLandscape Magazine

"This app has become an indispensable tool in my planning kit, I highly recommend it!" - David Kingham, Exploring Exposure

Watch a sunrise from the future in a rich simulation of sunlight, moonlight and starlight set against the actual topography of your planned shooting location.

Need to see when the arch of the Milky Way will rise between two mountain peaks? Need to see what time in the afternoon the valley will lose direct light in September?

Watch the light unfold under clear skies hours, days, weeks or years before you're actually there in person.

Key features includes:

- 3D topographic maps with simple navigation options
- Sun, moon and galactic centre continuous timeline showing key rise, set and transit events
- Full search capability to find your location (or enter decimal or DMS coordinates directly)
- Automated playback to watch a realtime or faster-than-realtime simulation of the light
- Flying mode for quick movement around a scene
- Enhanced mode for maximum topography and shadow detail
- Symbolic represetation of the Milky Way in Flying mode
- High resolution Milky Way and stars in Enhanced mode
- Direct elevation control for the 3D model camera
- Camera pitch and bearing indicators
- Moon phases are rendered accurately in the 3D scene
- Zoom in/out to equivalent 35mm focal length in enhanced mode
- Daily and annual events lists
- Shared location database with TPE
- Navigation and Artificial Highlights lighting modes
- Support for multiple map pins
- User settings for controlling scene complexity

If you like to plan your natural light photography to capture the photo opportunities others miss, TPE 3D is a must-have tool!

Note:

- This app is CPU and graphics intensive: modern device models provide the best user experience and highest resolution data
- Not recommended for users who only shoot in flat terrain
- Satellite maps are not included
- Building are not shown in 3D
- Max elevation data resolution is 1 arcsecond (approximately 30m/33yards)
- Requires an internet connection
- Does not currently provide simulation of lighting during solar and lunar eclipses
- Topographic data is available only between 83°N and 83°S: data may contain artifacts and errors
- Availability of map types is subject to change, due to 3rd party map service availability, terms or conditions

- Search is now much better at finding specific addresses
- Search results show different icons to distinguish place names, addresses and manually entered coordinates (TPE 3D will parse decimal degrees and DMS formats)
- Fixes search UI on iPad Pro 11"
- Updated SDKs and libraries

Please send your feedback and suggestions to support@photoephemeris.com - we'd love to hear from you! If you're enjoying TPE 3D, a review on the App Store is really helpful, and lets us keep improving the app.
1.3.4
Sep 25, 2018
- Camera max elevation above sea level (flight ceiling) increased
- Camera no longer moves horizontally if you hit the flight ceiling
- Display the DST aware time zone name (previously displayed the standard time zone name only)
- AzAlt indicator positions improved
- Updated SDKs, libraries
1.3.3
Feb 23, 2018
- New: Services Status screen
- Fix: possible crash in iOS 11 on selecting Save Image from the Share screen

The Services Status screen can be accessed from the Settings page. It shows current availability of the elevation, map and other web services which TPE 3D uses. If you're having trouble loading data, you can check to see if the requires services are up and running ok (it's very rare that they're not!). The services status screen queries an independent uptime monitoring service to give you a true picture of service availability.

If you're enjoying TPE 3D, a review on the App Store really helps us continue to develop the app. Send us your feedback at support@photoephemeris.com.

Oct 17, 2017
- UI updates for iOS 11
- Adds support for "Open in TPE 3D" from the Activity/Share sheet in TPE 4.0 (via Universal Links)

You can now set up a shot plan in TPE 4.0 and then choose Share/Open in TPE 3D: the shot will open with your map pins in place and date/time set - double tap a pin to fly directly to it and see the shot in 3D. Please ensure you have the TPE 4.0 update - check in the App Store if you haven't received it yet.
1.1
Sep 8, 2017
New:
- Sun, moon and galactic centre paths added
- Sun, moon are scaled when adjusting scene/time in enhanced mode (to make them easier to track visually)
- Scene size slider added to Settings screen
- When at pin, two finger long press walks backwards
- Ambient lighting is now adjustable in Settings (this primarily affects moonless nights)
- Tap sun or moon to start tracking (works in both flying and enhanced mode)

Improved:
- Moon visual appearance and lighting intensity
- When at pin, walk forward direction accounts for location of long press on screen
- Accuracy of sun and moon positions with respect to effect of atmospheric refraction (you should now see better agreement with other TPE versions when adjusted for height above the horizon)
- Accuracy of moon position algorithm (fixed two minor numerical typos in algorithm implementation)
- Reduced preferred frame rate on older devices to improve responsiveness
- Reduced frequency of calculation updates during gestures to improve responsiveness and reduce CPU utilization
- UI refinements

Fixes:
- Focal length calculation in landscape orientation had an error in the formula
- Sun color occasionally left at a default yellow when app first starts and sun is below +1 degree
- Automatic playback should pause on presenting a popover (iPad)
- Initial help overlay was not shown after reset on iPad

Changes:
- Height above the ground is now limited to 6,000m (and an absolute ceiling of 11,000m still applies)

Scene size: we recommend leaving the setting at its default value, unless: (i) you need snappier performance on an older device (in which case, go smaller) or (ii) you're working in a area with high prominence (e.g. high, isolated mountains) and need high accuracy around sunrise/sunset (in which case, go bigger).

Send your feedback, questions and suggestions to support@photoephemeris.com. We'd love to hear from you.

Send your feedback, questions and suggestions to support@photoephemeris.com. We'd love to hear from you.

- New: you can now use one or two fingers to look around when in Enhanced mode (i.e. you can still use two fingers like you do when Flying)
- New: pinch to fly in/out and twist to fly around gestures are now much better behaved (previously twisting would often result in the height above the ground changing unexpectedly)
- New: pitch and bearing gauges are now tappable. Tap Pitch to reset the camera first to -25° (look towards ground) or to 0° if at pin, or already at -25°. Tap bearing gauge to reset to true north.
- Fix: occasionally enhanced terrain would not load for some map tiles at max scene complexity
- Fix: enhanced stars could appear in flying mode if scene complexity was changed significantly
- Fix: double Help Overlays can occur if a new user (or a user who has reset Help Overlays) drops and goes to pin in quick succession
