About Terrace Hill: Terrace Hill, located in Des Moines, Iowa, is the official residence of Iowa’s governor and a National Historic Landmark. Built in 1869 by Iowa's first millionaire, Benjamin Franklin Allen, Terrace Hill is one of Iowa's most treasured homes. After Allen suffered a reversal of fortune, he sold this "Prairie Palace of the West" to Frederick Marion Hubbell. The property stayed in the Hubbell family for 70 years and was given by the Hubbell heirs to the State of Iowa in 1971. Since then, Iowa’s governors and their families have lived on the third floor, while the first and second floors serve as a museum. Each year Terrace Hill welcomes dignitaries, school children, and visitors from all over the world. For more information about Terrace Hill, please visit terracehill.iowa.gov.
