About TrafficCamNZ

TrafficCamNZ displays internet accessible pictures of Traffic Cameras all over the world. Use it for any image with a fixed URL (web address).

Images you choose as "Featured" are downloaded and setup side by side so that you can swipe across the screen to view multiple images quickly.
TrafficCamNZ works over the cellular network though it works best with WiFi because, usually, it's faster!

TrafficCamNZ can also use the GPS features in your device to show cameras around you. Try the predictive mode that predicts where you are travelling to display the next cameras (with known GPS coordinates) on your journey.

TrafficCamNZ now contains details of more than 7000 cameras from around the world. You choose which cameras are the "featured" ones. Featured cameras are easily identified in the Library; they have a Green dot next to them.
Managing your own personal list of cameras is easy too. This can be done in two ways:
1. Enter a new camera directly on the iPhone and key in the entire URL (http://mywebsite/image.jpg) or
2. Create your own XML file for importing into the application. Instructions on how to do this are available at the support web site or by contacting the developer.

Usage Notes:
* Pictures are displayed in the order they are received unless you set the image sequence number, you can then order the images how you want them
* Check your network usage when downloading over the cellular network
* Images are not cached, if you receive an image that isn't right (i.e. daylight when you know it is night time, that camera may not be functioning)
* Sometimes the traffic camera pictures are not up-to-date. You may see night pictures when it is supposed to be daylight or perhaps pictures don't change. TrafficCamNZ has no control over that
* You receive updates to the camera list automatically; a check is performed every 7 days when the application starts
* Tap the image on the main window to display it full screen

Features:
* Easily flick through the loaded images with your finger - this was the original idea behind the application
* Load your own web images
* Free version available, loads up to 3 images
* Full version available, loads up to 19 images on iPhone and 32 images on iPad
* Allows XML import of camera list
* Camera list (XML Import file) can be updated from a web site - doesn't require the release of a new application
* No advertising

Many great comments from around the world have been made about TrafficCamNZ:
* Great little app, what a time saver. I would often leave work to find the traffic all congested, now I can check before I leave and even if it gets busy I can check on the road and take a different route. I have set my own cameras and can quickly check what's what. A real must for driving commuters, couriers or even taxi's.
* This app works very well and is awesome if you travel a lot. Going on a road trip for work or vacation? Google the cameras for your cities, insert the URL into the app, and cameras appear
* I set it up for all the traffic cameras from Douglas County down through El Paso County (Colorado) and it works great! So well in fact, that I sprung for the paid version
* Make sure you enter in the URL's correctly - that's where some people mess up. What you see is basically what the traffic/weather cam sees wherever they are. They have to be viewable on the Internet first. Awesome app!
* App is very easy to use and I use it for going to work every day
* I put 2 of the most important traffic cams on the way to work and it works perfect

In this version:

This is a maintenance release that has been largely internally focused. The changes removed code, complicated routines, and quite possibly errors that could have resulted in the odd crash or two. Now it is cleaner and is no where near as complicated. Here is a bit of a summary of the changes:

● Internal changes that improve the reliability when a datafile update is processed
● Internal changes that improve the reliability when deleting cameras
● Internal changes switching from NIB files to Storyboards - this was a big change which should provide more reliabilty and stability
● Improvements to the Map Tab - when you select the Map Tab, and you have allowed your location to be detected, the map will move to you location to show you the cameras around you. In addition there is a handy button on the botton right of the screen to zoom to your location if you move away.
● First time user experience is improved again
● Quite possibly some new icons in a number of places and at x3 resolution too!
● Search bars on the camera list screens work in a much nicer interface way now.

1.9.2
Jun 26, 2014
In this version
● Fixes a launch crash when trying to perform a data conversion
● Fixes a issue trying to lookup the main datafile where the URL was appended to the URL (doubled up)

With iCloud enabled your TrafficCamNZ database is syncronised between your devices using the same iCloud account. Allow time for syncronisation to occur. When completed on an iPhone or iPad the Refresh button will turn red. On the Mac version the menu bar will change its title to indicate that syncronisation has completed - and on the Mac you will need to save the database to syncronise data to other devices.

Cool tip: Select your cameras to display using TrafficCamNZ on the Mac and save. When syncronised to an iPhone or iPad you can use the Chooser screen to re-order the images. Exit TrafficCamNZ on the iPhone/iPad and after the database has syncronised across iCloud the display order on the Mac is changed.

● TrafficCamNZ for Mac and iOS have a similar feature set. The goal was to allow monitoring of image snapshots from any camera on the internet and allow users to add/change/delete their own cameras rather than restrict the application to a specific list of cameras. The images displayed must come from a fixed address, that is the image file names cannot change - this can restrict TrafficCamNZ from displaying some images.
● TrafficCamNZ is not intended to be complex to use. The Main data file contains approximately 9000 cameras - these can be added/removed by the providers at any moment - the only "default" cameras shown by TrafficCamNZ are those that have been "scraped" off the internet.
● If you have an XML formatted list of images you think would be useful to TrafficCamNZ users please contact dgwilson@paradise.net.nz to arrange for the data to be made available in the main data feed. I look forward to hearing from you.

● AutoRefresh will stop when application is backgrounded and restart when brought to the front
● Tapping Save in Preferences will dismiss the Preferences window
● Fixed an error where data migration did not occur after choosing Local as the storage mechanism
● Fixed a data migration error for flat file to CoreData - NULL fields for attributes are no longer setup

1.9.0
May 30, 2014
This version includes CoreData and iCloud support for the TrafficCamNZ database. Changes to the TrafficCamNZ camera database are syncronised across all of your devices that have TrafficCamNZ installed and are using the same iCloud account. You don't have to use iCloud - there is a preference option to keep the TrafficCamNZ database local to the device you are using.

To support the change to CoreData for the camera database there were many changes to TrafficCamNZ both visually and internally. Here is a short highlight list of those changes and other changes that snuck in.
● The main screen has a new onscreen help function - tap the life saver ring in the upper left hand corner of the screen and some help information is overlaid on the screen to guide you on hpw to use the application. Tap to dismiss this overlay.
● Two finger tap an image on the main window to refresh just that image
● Bug fix for potential crash when attempting to return image data to a screen that no longer exists
● Fixed an issue on the Chooser screen where the Camera Descriptions and URLs were being truncated

● Fixed a performacne issue related to colour blending on all camera graphics images

● Camera information is now stored in a Core Data database
● iCloud - syncronise camera data between devices using the same iCloud account including between devices iOS and Mac
● Chooser screen re-written and re-re-written and re-re-re-written
● Dramatically reduced memory footprint, increased speed and optomisation
● Changed user experience for first time launch
● Added support for Chromecast - on the main screen tap the Chromecast icon to chose your Google Chromecast devvice, then single tapping or double tapping on an image will get your Chromecast device to retrieve the image from the internet - as you scroll images the Chromecast image will also change - on an iPad when viewing multiple images Chromecast works best when you tap an image on the iPad for displaying on Chromecast.
● Updates for 64bit support - mostly (revoked by Chromecast being only 32bit at this time)
● TrafficCamNZ as of this version (1.9.0) requires iOS 7.0 or higher
