About I AM: Voices of Rangatahi

I AM - The Voices of Rangatahi is a collection of kōrero (stories) and puzzles created by rangatahi Māori (Māori youth) in New Zealand.

I AM - The Voices of Rangatahi is a collection of stories created by groups of rangatahi Māori (Māori youth) in New Zealand on the theme of identity, or “my place in the world”.

The stories present the importance of relationships, interconnectivity, and the dual competencies required to navigate Te Ao Māori (the Māori world) and New Zealand/wider society.

Also presented is the experience of diverse realities of rangatahi Māori of today and how Māori identities are positively influenced by maintaining a sense of connection to Te Ao Māori.

The youth involved were responsible for all aspects of the app creation, here’s what they had to say about the experience:

“I knew I had love for digital tech when it was suggested that I do this course. It’s helpful to get more experience, because I do a lot digital stuff myself, making an app is a big thing and you learn a lot more--- the structure, the steps etc.”

“The “I am” theme in the poetry we did, helped me realise that I like poetry. The tutor gave us a topic as a group, and we talked about it and that’s how we came up with the poem”.

“I like to teach other people about my culture, and to learn my languages.”

“At school, one of the teachers taught us how to make apps and videos; doing stuff with technology. So, I knew about this area of work beforehand and I already had an interest. This course has helped me to grow my interest.”

“This course has also shown me that I can choose more jobs or careers for my future – e.g. I can do app making, technology, animating and recording.”

The apps were produced under the auspices of Ka Hao, the Māori Digital Technology Development Fund with the aim of increasing self-confidence in using technology, increasing awareness of opportunities in technology, and sparking interest in pursuing technology as a career.

Also developed is a kaupapa Māori career framework for working with Māori youth that can be used as a reference point for designing, implementing and evaluating career development tools and programs in the technology sector.
