About ARISE by SpellBound

Dive into ARISE, the underwater augmented reality scavenger hunt game played by kids, built for healthcare.

A storm destroyed Hermy’s reef, and you found his message in a bottle! Will you answer his call and save the reef?

HOW ARISE WORKS FOR HOSPITALS
1. Arrange the ten reusable wall decals in a patient's room, hallway, or activity room.
2. Place the ARISE reef mat on patient's bedside table.
3. Download and launch the ARISE by SpellBound app.
4. Point the device camera at the reef mat to activate gameplay.
5. Guide patient through gameplay and to the first wall decal, and watch them explore!

HOW ARISE WORKS FOR PATIENTS
1. Tap on the ARISE by SpellBound app and ask your adult or nurse to help you get started.
2. Aim your camera at the bedside reef mat to create your character and begin the game.
3. In the reef, Hermy the hermit crab will give you your first mission.
4. Find the first wall decal to meet new friends and build your reef!

PLAY-BASED THERAPY
• Gamification motivates movement— Movement has long been a standard of care for adults. ARISE brings it to pediatrics with a scavenger hunt.
• Helps reduce pain perception— Augmented reality has been found to reduce pain perception. ARISE features best-in-class AR that gets kids playing instead of hurting.
• Enhances patient comfort— Fosters a kid-friendly environment. Provides a welcome distraction from the unfamiliarity of a clinical setting.
• Creates moments of magic— ARISE's creative and immersive gameplay experience gives patients a reason to smile, even while working towards their recovery.

EASY FOR HOSPITALS
• No new hardware required— Unlike with VR, no technical equipment is necessary— your ARISE kit consists only of low-profile vinyl wall decals.
• Saves valuable time & effort— Targets can be moved and placed anywhere, and setup or teardown takes mere minutes. It can be installed and staff trained in under 20 minutes.
• Sanitizable and safe— ARISE's wall decals are easily detachable and are made of glossy vinyl, so staff can disinfect them in-between patients.
• Encourages independent play— The game can be played and operated by a single child with a device, so it does not require hospital staff to constantly monitor or help.

Our main goals in this version are:

1. Improving random treasure chest rewards to incentivize Treasure Hunting.
2. Refactoring existing systems so ARISE can more easily be updated without always needing to delete old saves.

We improved the treasure chest rewards by adding a bunch of new cosmetic and decoration items. Some items are “seasonal items” that can only acquired during specific times of the year. Seasonal catalogues give exposure to these special items, and new shops allow players to learn about items sooner. (previously shops were hidden behind 2-3 levels of questing, now they are available almost immediately). New shops also give purpose to some of the previously idle buildings in the reef (Anchor Fitness, Shaina’s Barn, Hermy’s House, The Office).

Preventing the deletion of save files is a technical challenge that relies on a few main things:

- A controlled index of all important game ids, so that objects referenced by serialized data can be migrated between versions. (quests, items, characters, etc.)
- Saving as little state as possible, so that less state has to be migrated between versions. For example, the list of active conversations and quests were previously saved, but are now computed at runtime based on other game states.
- Refactoring the save system to check multiple places for save files, depending on the previous version of the save.

Additional changes include:
- Portal doorways and windows are now twice as wide.
- The Kelp Forest and Minefield have been remodeled and are much more attractive environments.
- Enhancements to the skybox and day night cycle.
- Settings page for enabling/disabling the day night cycle.

Conversation Menu:
- A new menu allows the player to start a conversation with any character in the current scene.
- Alerts on this menu notify the player of the important conversations available to them.
- Helps the player navigate to characters hidden offscreen or behind obstacles.
The Art Studio (new minigame):
- A painting sandbox where players can paint and save custom paintings with an array of brushes, colors and stamps.
- Paintings can be saved and viewed in the player’s inventory.
- Paintings can be applied to special parts of the ocean, so the player can decorate and leave their mark on the virtual world.
Rips & Shreds (new minigame):
- A bullet hell style minigame accessed through the Clownfish Portal.
- Dodge rocks and shoot obstacles out of the way as you try to recover Clara’s missing jokebook pages!
The Open Ocean:
- Manual floor setting - Players can now set the floor height by lowering their device to floor.
- Grid content - As players walk around the open ocean, they will see their floor populate with plants, rocks, and sticks.
Digging & Treasure Hunting (new minigame):
- When walking around the Open Ocean, players will occasionally come across treasure maps. These maps will lead them to buried treasure, which they can dig up and open.
- cosmetic items can be received as rewards from chests.
Lock Picking (new minigame):
- Certain chests that players come across will be locked. These chests can be picked open using lock picks that they can purchase from Red Beard.
- Lock picks can be purchased from Red Beard’s treasures, a shop that he runs in his portal.
Bridge Battle (new minigame):
- A shooting gallery style minigame where players must defeat red beard to get him to surrender the bridge and grant them access to the remainder of the reef.
Weed Whacker:
- New visual effect for when the player takes damage.
The Captain’s Piano:
- The player can now play any song to complete Tammy’s “A Captain’s Piano” quest.
Minigame Chapters:
- Minigames with multiple levels are now organized into chapters. Each chapter has 3 levels that revolve around a game mechanic, quest requirement, or art style.
Activities System:
- Characters can now perform activities, which makes them move about the reef and perform animations instead of just sitting idly by their house.
Characters:
- All new illustrations for the characters & dialogue portraits.
Music System:
- Song players now play layered stems instead of a single AudioClip.
- Stems have volumes that change dynamically based on the global “Intensity” level, which can be used to make rich adaptive music experiences.
- A singleton AudioListener and persistent song players allows songs to cross-fade seamlessly between scenes.
Quest System:
- “Focused Quest” section of Quest scroll was removed.
- Each dialogue interaction has a “relevant quest” that becomes the focused quest whenever the interaction is played.
Camera / Photographs:
- Players now have a camera that they can use to take and store in-game snapshots.
- characters and items are “photographable,” allowing us to know if they are present within a photograph. We plan to use this system to make quests where the player has to take photographs of certain things.
The Reef:
- The “Reef Entrance” and “The Reef” now exist in the same scene.
- Every building has both a destroyed and fixed version.
- Olivia’s Garden has been added to the neighborhood to introduce the decorations system earlier.
Settings:
- Players can set the Reef Sky Camera sensitivity through a menu in the settings.
Graphics Enhancements:
- Grass Shader that allows for prettier, denser grass

- The In-Game Player HUD has been given a facelift.
- Portal doorways require AR Floor Tracking, but the tracking sometimes fails when a floor is particularly glossy. We are adding the option to use “Windows” instead of “Doorways,” to remove this dependancy.
- Error catching and handling for faulty camera permission when the app is opened.

The SpellBound team’s main focuses for v.15 are streamlining and flexibility— streamlined setup and gameplay so your patients can start playing quicker and keep playing longer, and increased flexibility in gameplay so more patient populations will be able to benefit from ARISE in their treatment plans. Let’s take a look at some key changes we made:

We re-imagined and re-designed the Reef experience.
After over a year of testing, feedback, and problem-solving, we have re-imagined the Reef to be a “home base” within the game instead of the previous paper mat. This non-AR home base is accessible through a button in the main screen that switches between “the Reef” and “the Ocean”.

We added key in-app tutorials.
To avoid confusion and reduce the need for excessive adult supervision, we have added a few key tutorials at certain parts of the game to teach players how to navigate and interact in the game.

We restructured quests to increase player agency.
During playtesting, we noticed that some kids really loved to connect with the undersea characters, while other kids loved to complete quests, and some kids would play the minigames all day if they could. In this version, we restructured quests to allow for either story-first play or movement-first play. The best of both worlds!

As always, we want to thank all of our customers, partners, and playtesters for helping us make
ARISE the best game it can be!

Thank you!

- License Scene:
- Users can use either vumarks or QR codes to attach a license to their app.
- Users will attach their license to their app upon the app download, not during gameplay.
- This screen opens when the app is opened and no license is present, or optionally from the splash screen.
- Users can now go back to the license screen from the splash screen to change licenses
- Main and Side Quests:
- Main quests are directly linked to the Reef storyline while side quests are not
- Quest tab in the chest is now split into main quests and side quests
- Focused Quest:
- You can now “focus” on a quest and the quest requirements will appear on your main screen for easier viewing
- The Role of the school:
- The main purpose of the school now is to provide a quest that references every location (find one fish at each portal), so that if the player opts out of going to the reef, there is something listing everything available to find.
- You can now choose to go to the reef for the building tutorial, or you can go straight to the portals after talking to the school and scanning the reef mat.
- All fish are now different colors so you can now differentiate between them
- Quest tracking for finding fish now tells you which portals you haven’t found them at yet
- Credits Scene:
- The list of credits has been moved out of the gameplay menu into a separate scene accessed from the splash screen.
- The Daily Challenge:
- Every day, the player can complete an optional challenge to walk a certain distance for a coin reward.
- This challenge is on be default, but can be disabled and reconfigured (distance, days) as needed.
- App Rating Modal:
- After the player closes the first portal they ever visit, they are given a chance to rate the app.
- There is also an option to resubmit that rating in the game menu
- Analytics Dashboard Scene:
- Each Page in the analytics dashboard is summarized by a bar graph that shows activity, instead of just a raw number. Lists of all data points are still available.
- Graphs can be toggled between weekly and month view.
- The playerID is visible on all page in the analytics dashboard.
- Message in a Bottle requires the player to visit the Reef gateway.
- Blueprints are no longer won from minigames, the player has to verbally invite the character to the reef. The character then gives the blueprints.

1. New focus on Minigames...we are slowly replacing "tasks" with minigames as the main way to earn coins and progressing the story of the game.
2. Shock Shaker
1. A new minigame created for Electro the Eel.
2. Charge a ball of electricity and fling it at Electro to help him recharge his energy. He moves around a lot, so make sure you time your throws well!
3. Bait 'n Breakfast
1. A new minigame created for Shaina the Shark.
2. Collect waffles from fishermen by cutting their fishing lines. But be careful not to pollute the ocean by releasing their trash into it!
4. To build a unique world item (house or building), you first need to acquire that building's blueprints.
5. The entire UI is hidden during Reef camera animations.
6. Shop prices, level XP requirements, and coin/XP earn rates have been recalibrated.

1. All of the character dialogue is now narrated by voice actors, allowing younger patients to better engage with the story.
2. Most characters have been remodeled, and have animated mouths and various dialogue animations that bring them to life.
3. Some Quests now reward the player with cosmetic items that they can gift to the characters, giving patients the opportunity to customize their experience.
4. More tasks now begin with dialogue sequence prompts.
5. All tasks are now either 15, 30, or 60 seconds, shortening the wait time and encouraging the patient to play for longer periods of time thanks to the ability to complete tasks more consistently.
6. The main gameplay is now split between:
1. Augmented Reality Exploration Scene:
1. Wall decals are used to position Gateways in the scene.
2. These Gateways lead to Portals, which function as AR windows into 3-D scenes where the characters reside so that patients can better explore each character's world.
3. Once spawned, these Portals do not require the player to keep the image target in frame, which greatly improves the experience of viewing AR locations. Players can turn completely around and still not lose track of the targets.
4. ARkit and ARcore are used to track the position of the floor.
5. Portals match the height of the floor, so there is seamless immersion between the AR floor and the real world floor.
2. Non-Augmented 3-D Reef Scene
1. The Reef is now accessed through a Gateway.
2. Red Beard's Treasures is now built by the player, instead of appearing from nowhere.
3. The Reef is 4x as big as it used to be, giving players even more flexibility when customizing their reefs.
4. The Reef has a day-night cycle that matches the real world time. (Dark at night, light at day)
7. Player Movement is now measured by distance moved in AR instead of by a pedometer. This method is more responsive, accurate, and also allows us to track both vertical (reaching and bending) and horizontal (walking, etc.) movement.
8. The button to open the main menu has been moved from the player's avatar to a button in the top right for more intuitive access.
9. Music, SFX, and Dialogue Narration are all individually toggle-able in Menu/Audio Settings.
10. A new art style is featured that gives better lighting, shadow, and fog effects.
11. The Opacity Editor for the Ocean has been removed, because the Ocean is opaque in the portals, and transparent outside of them.
12. Various player guidance improvements have been implemented.
1. Quest requirements now have better iconography, and tapping them leads to more information about the requirement.
2. Quests are now completed manually instead of automatically, which is more satisfying to the player, and helps direct them towards what to do next.
3. In the beginning of the game, a modal pops up instructing the player how to interact with the reef.
4. When a Gateway is in frame but the floor isn't, a modal reminds them to find the floor first.
5. The Reef's Camera is now animated in some places to direct the player where to go next.
13. Bug fixes and performance improvements have been implemented.
