This App is simply the best interactive, most complete, self contained dictionary and translator between English and Ancient Egyptian!
This app explains what the ancient symbols mean, how they may have been pronounced and how they formed words and phrases.
The App contains 2777 hieroglyphic signs, and 60,069 words, phrases, titles, epithets, and locations used in Ancient Egypt. The dictionary also contains the Horus, Birth, and Throne names of all the known Pharaohs and Queens of Egypt. Our dictionary has almost triple the content of any other smartphone translation apps. All vetted against modern professional references.
Hieroglyphics Pro has several modes:
Beginner, Student and Pro.
Beginner mode simplifies the App with a minimal set of 200 glyphs and an easy pronunciation guide.
Student mode show the standard Middle Egyptian Gardiner set of over 700 glyphs, organized by shape, and standard transliteration.
The Pro mode uses all 1,071 glyphs in Gardiner's classic categories plus over 1700 additional New Kingdom and later signs.
A unique feature of Hieroglyphics Pro is the ability to find glyphs by how often they are used in inscriptions. This makes adding common signs to a phrase or word is a snap!
Egyptian words and phrases are drawn graphically in quadrat groups, in the artistic style of the ancient inscriptions.
The App now offers 6 ways to enter Hieroglyphs for translation:
• Graphically from Gardiner groupings, or in Beginner Mode, plus Manley's Groupings by shape
- A unique feature allows finding glyphs sorted by their frequency of use!
• Direct keyboard text entry of Gardiner codes (i.e., A1, D21, Aa2)
• Typing in phonetic shortcuts as defined by the MdC (i.e., Htp, nTr, r, etc.)
• By transliteration symbol from the Phonetic shortcuts table
• Searching for keywords in a glyph's description or determinative words
Text entries of Gardiner Codes and MdC can now be edited with a cursor and finger swiping, just like other text editing apps! Very quick and convenient!
Egyptians wrote Right to Left, Left to Right, and Top to Bottom. The App allows you to enter Left to Right, and then view the Glyphs in reverse direction if you wish.

First, a bit of housekeeping. Up to now, the Hiero Pro App forwarded to us some anonymized usage and crash data. Between the documented stability of the App, and Apple's emphasis on user privacy, we no longer collect these data. If, going forward, you should have some kind of issue with the App, please contact us directly through the Settings/Feedback link. We truly appreciate all feedback!
We have added 806 new words and phrases from the AED/AES Project. The new total is 57,831.
Some AED entries use Latin integers in their transliteration and Gardiner Codes, for example:
Overseer of the Court of the Six Houses
G17-D21-Aa21-S43-G43-N35-F18.X1-G36.X1-6. and

These will now be correctly searched and displayed.

This is the beginning of a major expansion of our internal dictionary!
We gratefully announce that Hieroglyph Pro has been authorized to use the AES/AED Project dataset from the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. We gratefully acknowledge Simon Schweitzer's permission to incorporate these data.
As we vet and translate this trove of words, phrases, and sentences, we will release regular updates. Today we add 1000 new entries to our dictionary which now stands at a total of 56,149. There are many thousands more to come!
We also added 600 new hieroglyphs to support the new vocabulary. Many of these glyphs are obscure and rarely seen. Some do not yet have an available graphic representation. They are noted in red in the Glyph Select pane.
A crashing bug which only occurred under very unusual circumstances has finally been laid to rest.
The internal Help files have been updated to reflect the new user interface for glyph selection.

New feature: You can now copy translated inscriptions of quadrated (2D authentically layed out glyphs) to the clipboard in either left to right or right to left direction.
Of course the original option to get linearly formatted glyphs plus translations and phonetics is still available too.
