Last updated on Sep 4, 2024
Old Versions
This month we have lots of visual fixes, and one new experimental feature we'd love your feedback on.
Visually, we've:
- Updated the site picker to be simpler and easier to use – it adds support for context menus and previews.
- Fixed an issue where some navigation bars in the app were transparent.
- Updated dozens of screens to avoid visual bugs by simplifying the code.
Under "App Settings", you now can try out Application Passwords – a new Experimental Feature for self-hosted sites that allows them to work with the apps if they use 2FA or SSO.

We've fixed three big issues in this release:
* Some users couldn't update their post's content.
* Some users had images that were rotated the wrong way.
* A rare crash in the editor caused by unsupported blocks
As always, please reach out to support if anything isn't working right!

We fixed a rare bug that made the app crash when trashing posts. One person’s trash is another person’s… still trash, we guess.
We also fixed an issue with the navigation bar in the Post Visibility picker. While we were at it, we updated the editor’s Post Settings screen to use the new navigation bar style. Nice.

Noticed a long delay when saving posts? That might have been because of image, gallery, or file blocks—but not anymore. Saving should be quick and easy, no matter how many photos or files you’ve uploaded.
We also fixed the overlapping “Done” button on the “Post Published” screen. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy.

We’ve been busier than Batman after yet another Arkham breakout. (We’d like to know what local billionaire Bruce Wayne is doing about that.) Buckle up, this update is a big one.
We fixed multiple issues with post syncing, like posts not loading when the app opens and not showing up in the right status tab. A place for every post, and every post in its place.
When you’re editing a page, you can now set the parent page within the page’s settings. We added slug and excerpt fields to the settings area, and we removed the status field. We also improved the way different settings are ordered and grouped.
We also resolved issues with the Publish Date field in your post settings. The new date picker makes it easy to choose your publication date, even if you’re in a different time zone from the blog. You’ll only see the Publish Date field when you’re ready to hit publish.
We added a new Media Uploads screen to your publishing workflow so you can see uploads in progress. You’ll see any error messages for failed uploads here, along with the option to cancel them. Oh, and speaking of errors, we improved notifications for errors with uploading and publishing.
We updated the “more” menu in the editor with a new look and feel, and we added a badge to indicate when a post is password protected. (We don’t recommend using the password 1-2-3-4-5. Amazingly, that’s the same combination we have on our luggage.)
Pending posts now have clearer workflows for admins and contributors. We also updated the success view for published posts. It’s now easier to Share and Blaze a post.
Changed your mind about trashing a post? You can now view and restore trashed posts and pages from the editor.
We removed the “draft uploaded” bar that appeared on the bottom of your screen when you were saving or updating a draft post. This did not spark joy, so we thanked it and said goodbye.
Finally, we squashed a long list of bugs and fixed a handful of rare crashes caused by code issues.
- If a draft on your device is different from the draft saved to the web, the app will now show a conflict resolution screen instead of making changes on its own.
- Discarding changes to a draft will no longer delete the entire draft. You also won’t see the option to discard changes when you haven’t made any.
- You’ll now see an error message when you assign a page author who isn’t eligible to be an author.

We’ve introduced a fix that prevents certain bugs within the editor and individual block types. This fix logs any bugs that sneak through so we can squash those, too.
We also improved your previewing and publishing experience by removing the edit button from the “Post Published” success screen and the publish button from the “Preview” screen. All in a day’s work.

We made a few changes to the block editor.
- The app won’t crash anymore when the editor auto-scrolls down to a block.
- You’ll now see an error message when a video fails to upload to media and text blocks.
- Images no longer appear partly transparent while they’re being uploaded. All color, all the time.

We’ve made several tweaks to the pre-publishing sheet. You might notice changes like smoother screen transitions, a simplified date picker, and cleaner settings when you’re publishing on your iPad.
We also updated the info section of your user profile that talks about your Gravatar. (Not sure what that is? You’re in for a Grava-treat.)

You’ll now see a notification when you’re working offline. Media uploads to image blocks will also pause when your internet connection cuts out, then resume when you reconnect.
As an added bonus, when you manually retry a failed media upload, the app will retry all other failed media uploads in your post. Now that’s efficient.
When you select a custom gradient in the block editor, there’s now an indicator to show your chosen color.
Scrolling through your images on the Site Media details screen will make them load ahead of time for a faster experience. Or maybe they were there all along.
We added support for higher-resolution thumbnails, GIF and video playback, documents, and other file previews. (homer-simpson-woohoo.gif)
We switched up the publishing flow to give you clearer instructions. Users with the “Contributor” role will see the “Submit for Review” action instead of “Publish.” You can also trash draft posts and deleted posts without having to confirm.
There’s now a “Share” action in the site context menu so you can share your site with others.
Finally, because we live for the applause, we improved the in-app rating prompt. You’ll be asked to leave a review if you’re happy with the app, or given a feedback form if you feel the app needs work. Feedback is how we get better, so feel free to share yours!

When you’re editing text blocks in the editor, your device’s keyboard will no longer disappear mid-edit. The editor will also scroll directly to a new block when you add it. Write away, friend.
Miss logging in with your security keys? Not anymore—we’ve re-enabled security keys for two-factor authentication during login. The only one getting into your account is you.
Finally, we tackled several rare (and not-so-rare) problems that were causing app crashes. These issues were mostly related to editing tags and categories, using duplicate tags, deleting posts, and editing deleted posts. All in a day’s work.

We updated the classic editor with new media pickers for Photos and Site Media. Don’t worry, you can still upload images, videos, and more to your site.
Speaking of media types—you can now add media filters to the Site Media screen. If you’re using an iPhone, you’ll notice the new aspect ratio mode, too. Both options are available when you tap the title menu.
Finally, we fixed the broken compliance pop-up that appears while you’re checking stats during the onboarding process. Sweet.

We added an Optimize Images setting so newly uploaded images are optimal size and quality by default. You can also delete images, videos, and other media in the Media screen in My Sites.
Still want more media support? You’re in luck: thumbnails and original images now load faster in the Site Media screen, and GIF thumbnails are properly animated. We also added buttons so you can select and deselect your media files in preview mode.
In the block editor, you’ll only see the “ungroup” option for nested blocks if those blocks actually support it. Oh, and we added a native photo picker to the story editor.
We fixed the media item details screen for iPad users. We also squashed a bug on the Stats screen, so sites now open when you click their URLs.
Finally, your list of site pages now loads faster. Yes, even when your site has hundreds of pages. And yes, we’re just that good.

Buckle up, this update’s a doozy. Let’s start with Site Media.
- We updated the Site Media screen design with better menus, file selection and sharing, and more. It even runs faster—no more jerky GIFs or stalled-out videos.
- You can use the pan gesture to select multiple media files at once. It’s also easier to swipe from one photo to another, change metadata, and delete items.
- On iPad, you can switch between square image previews and aspect ratio.
- We fixed issues with blank placeholder images, incorrect messages, document sharing, and occasional crashes.
We’re not done yet. We also made big changes to Posts & Pages.
- The Posts & Pages screen got a facelift with clean, simple display options.
- Use more advanced search features, like author and tag filters, to find the content you’d like to edit. Search also works across all authors (unless, of course, you want content from one specific person.)
- Use swipe actions to view, share, or delete posts and pages. Sweet.
- The context menu now lets you access comments, settings, and other actions for a post or page.
- We fixed issues with page refreshes and visibility, as well as a handful of crashes.
Finally, we fixed a handful of pesky problems across the app.
- The app now recognizes when you’ve finished uploading a GIF. (monty-burns-excellent.gif)
- “Hidden” posts now have a better description for their privacy status.
- The reader now scrolls to the top when you tap the status bar. Up, up, and away.
- The Menus screen properly creates menu items based on top-level pages.
- We fixed a crash related to using text colors in older site themes.
- You shouldn’t run into any errors when you paste deeply nested content. Much like onions, ogres, cakes, or parfaits, your content can have many layers.

- The reader now scrolls to the top when you tap the status bar. Up, up, and away.
- The Menus screen properly creates menu items based on top-level pages.
- We fixed a crash related to using text colors in older site themes.

We made some changes to the block editor.
- Inactive social icons and Synced Pattern titles are no longer invisible in block-based themes using dark mode. Good try, fellas, but you’re not as ninja as you think.
- In the Classic editor, you can now convert your content into blocks with the click of a button.
Finally, we squashed a mini-swarm of bugs.
- You shouldn’t run into any login issues if you enter the wrong site address on the first try.
- Incorrect HTML tags won’t show up in your post titles—you’ll only see plain text.
